Junior Assistant Manager - Riversdale

SUMMARY:
Number Two Piggeries is seeking a reliable, hands-on Junior Assistant Manager with a strong maintenance focus to join the Riversdale Weaner–Grower Unit, situated approximately 6km east of Riversdale next to the N2 in the Western Cape. This intensive weaner–grower unit carries an average of 13 500 pigs on farm and requires a practical person who can combine sound pig husbandry with proactive maintenance and team support.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and carry out general farm maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance on buildings, pens, slurry systems, and feed and water systems.
• Inspect infrastructure, fencing, water systems, ventilation, and equipment daily to identify and report faults, and coordinate timely repair.
• Supervise and participate in the maintenance of automated liquid or mash feeding systems and pipelines, including checking for leaks, blockages, and calibration issues.
• Assist with pig movements, weighing, drafting, and loading, ensuring low-stress handling and adherence to biosecurity protocols.
• Monitor feed availability, water supply, environment (temperature and ventilation), and general pig health, escalating issues to the Farm Manager or Assistant Unit Manager.
• Assist with recording daily production data (mortalities, treatments, weights, feed use, growth performance) and ensuring accurate, up-to-date records for the unit.
• Help implement and maintain strict biosecurity, cleaning, and disinfection procedures across all weaner and grower houses.
• Supervise and guide general workers and stockmen during daily routines, and step in to support management in staff supervision and task allocation when required.
• Support the Farm Manager and Assistant Unit Manager with any other operational tasks needed to achieve production and welfare targets on the unit.

POSITION INFO:
Minimum Requirements

• Agricultural Diploma / Degree (Animal Production, Livestock, or similar preferred).
• At least 2 years’ practical experience in intensive livestock farming, preferably in pig production, weaner/grower or finisher operations.
• Proven hands-on maintenance skills, including basic plumbing, welding, fencing, irrigation, and general building/equipment repairs.
• Experience working with automated or semi-automated feeding and water systems will be a strong advantage.
• Valid Code 10 or 14 driver’s licence with PDP.
• Ability to operate farm vehicles and equipment (tractor, TLB or similar) will be an advantage.
• Physically fit, dependable, organised, and comfortable working with pigs in an intensive farm environment.
• Willingness to work weekends and public holidays on a roster, and to respond to urgent maintenance or animal-welfare issues after hours when needed.
