An opportunity is available for an experienced UHT PROCESS / PRODUCTION CONTROLLER to join a FMCG manufacturing operation based in Newcastle, Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective operation, monitoring and control of UHT processing activities, ensuring that production is carried out safely, efficiently and consistently in accordance with approved production procedures, quality standards and food-safety requirements.
- The position is suited to a technically minded production professional who understands UHT/long-life processing, process controls, production parameters, CIP systems, quality checks and automated manufacturing equipment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate, monitor and control UHT processing equipment and associated production systems.
- Ensure that UHT processing is conducted according to approved production procedures, recipes, and process specifications.
- Monitor critical process parameters including temperature, pressure, flow, holding time and other relevant production variables.
- Start up, operate and shut down UHT processing systems safely and correctly.
- Monitor control panels, PLC/HMI interfaces, alarms and automated process-control systems.
- Identify process deviations and take appropriate corrective action within the authorised operating parameters.
- Monitor product flow from processing through to downstream filling/packaging operations.
- Conduct routine in-process checks and record production and process information accurately.
- Ensure correct product changeovers, line preparation and production sequencing.
- Operate and monitor CIP (Clean-In-Place) systems and ensure cleaning cycles are completed according to approved procedures.
- Verify that equipment and production lines are correctly prepared before production commences.
- Liaise with Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, Stores and other relevant departments to maintain efficient production flow.
- Report equipment faults, abnormal operating conditions, quality deviations and production stoppages promptly.
- Assist maintenance personnel with fault identification and provide relevant technical/process information where required.
- Minimise product losses, downtime, rework and unnecessary waste through effective process control.
- Maintain accurate production records, batch documentation, checklists and process logs.
- Ensure full product and batch traceability in accordance with company procedures.
- Follow all food-safety, hygiene, GMP, HACCP and workplace safety requirements.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping within the processing area.
- Ensure that all operating procedures, work instructions and safety requirements are followed.
- Participate in product changeovers, start-ups, shutdowns and production troubleshooting.
- Escalate recurring process or equipment problems to the relevant supervisor, manager or technical department.
- Assist with investigations into process deviations, product-quality issues and production losses.
- Work effectively within a shift-based manufacturing environment where required.
- Perform other reasonable production and process-control duties associated with the position.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
- Grade 12 / Matric minimum requirement.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Food Technology, Liquid Technology, Food Science, Process Technology, Production Management or a related field will be advantageous.
- Relevant UHT, Liquid-processing, beverage-processing, food-manufacturing or liquid-processing experience is essential.
- Previous experience operating or controlling UHT / ultra-high-temperature processing equipment is highly advantageous.
- Practical understanding of automated production equipment, PLC/HMI-controlled systems and process instrumentation.
- Working knowledge of CIP systems and cleaning procedures.
- Understanding of HACCP, GMP, food safety, hygiene and quality-control principles.
- Ability to read and understand production procedures, process specifications and operating instructions.
- Previous experience in a continuous or batch-process manufacturing environment will be advantageous.
- Ability to work shifts, weekends, public holidays and/or overtime where operationally required.
- Good computer literacy and ability to complete electronic or manual production records.
- Strong production documentation and reporting discipline.
