Diesel Mechanic – Heavy Duty Vehicles
POSITION INFO:
Required Qualifications & Experience:
Recognised Diesel Mechanic trade qualification and trade test certificate.
Minimum 5 years’ relevant heavy duty diesel mechanic experience, with proven hands-on
experience working on Volvo V3, V4 and V5 trucks.
Demonstrated experience in engine rebuilds, gearbox repairs, pneumatic systems and
electrical fault finding.
Strong electrical and electronic diagnostic ability is essential.
Experience using Volvo diagnostic systems, preferably Volvo Tech Tool, and interpreting
wiring diagrams and technical manuals.
Previous experience supervising or leading a workshop team.
Valid driver’s licence; Code EC/Code 14 heavy vehicle licence preferred.
Computer literacy and the ability to use digital job cards and electronic maintenance records.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Diagnose, service and repair Volvo V3, V4 and V5 trucks, including engines, gearboxes,
transmissions, clutches, differentials and driveline components.
2. Perform engine rebuilds and overhauls, including dismantling, inspection, measurement, fault
identification, assembly and testing.
3. Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic faults, including wiring, charging and starting
systems, sensors, control units and vehicle communication faults.
4. Diagnose and repair air and pneumatic systems, including compressors, air leaks, valves,
braking systems and air suspension.
5. Repair and maintain steering, suspension, cooling, lubrication and fuel systems.
6. Use diagnostic software, electronic testing equipment and workshop manuals to identify
faults accurately and verify completed repairs.
7. Plan and perform preventative maintenance to reduce breakdowns, repeat repairs and
vehicle downtime.
8. Lead and coordinate the workshop team, allocate work, monitor progress and inspect
completed repairs.
9. Work closely with operations to prioritise repairs and communicate vehicle availability, repair
progress and expected completion times.
10. Attend to breakdowns and call-outs when required.
11. Complete and maintain job cards, inspection checklists, ISO documents, service records and
parts records accurately and promptly.
12. Record faults, work performed, parts used, outstanding defects and recommendations on the
company’s ERP system and designated communication channels.
13. Ensure vehicles are tested and confirmed safe before release, with unresolved defects
escalated to management.
14. Monitor parts usage, repair quality and workshop productivity to control costs.
15. Maintain tools, equipment, workshop housekeeping and safe working practices.
