Fishing Guide

SUMMARY:
 
The Fishing Guide is responsible for providing guests with a professional, safe, and memorable fishing experience at the lodge’s rivers, dams, or lakes. The role combines technical angling expertise with hospitality, environmental awareness, and storytelling to ensure guests enjoy both the sport and the natural surroundings. The guide manages all aspects of fishing excursions, maintains equipment, ensures compliance with lodge conservation policies, and delivers high-quality guest service in line with 5-star lodge standards.
Key Responsibilities

• Guest Experience & Guiding
• Host and guide guests on fishing excursions (fly-fishing, bass, trout, or tiger fishing depending on lodge location).
• Provide instruction and assistance for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced anglers.
• Educate guests on fish species, ecosystems, and responsible fishing practices.
• Ensure guest safety at all times on boats, riverbanks, or dams.
• Offer personalized service—setting up rods, tying flies/lures, and cleaning/packing gear.
• Equipment & Facilities
• Maintain, clean, and repair fishing equipment, boats, and tackle.
• Monitor stock levels of flies, bait, rods, reels, and safety gear.
• Ensure fishing areas, boats, and gear are kept to 5-star lodge presentation standards.
• Conservation & Compliance
• Enforce lodge fishing rules (e.g., catch-and-release policies, barbless hook regulations, permits).
• Promote sustainable fishing practices and environmental respect.
• Monitor water conditions, fish health, and ecological balance.
• Guest Hospitality
• Provide refreshments, snacks, or picnic setups during excursions.
• Share knowledge about local wildlife, birding, and lodge surroundings.
• Work closely with lodge management, activities team, and game rangers to coordinate guest schedules.
• Administration
• Record guest catches, fishing activity reports, and lodge catch data.
• Assist with guest billing and activity bookings when required.
• Contribute to lodge marketing by photographing fishing experiences or sharing guest stories.

POSITION INFO:
Qualifications & Experience

• Essential
• Proven experience as a professional fishing guide (fly-fishing, trout, bass, or tigerfish depending on lodge location).
• Strong angling skills with knowledge of local species and techniques.
• Valid First Aid & CPR certification.
• Valid driver’s license and boat license (if motorized boats are used).
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong swimming ability and water safety knowledge.
• Preferred
• FGASA Level 1 (or higher) Nature Guide qualification, or equivalent guiding certification.
• Knowledge of local ecology, birdlife, and wildlife.
• Hospitality experience in a lodge, safari, or outdoor tourism environment.
• Multilingual abilities (advantage with international guests).
• Ability to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays.
