COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER

SUMMARY:
The Allergy and Immunology Unit (AIU), based at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute(www.lunginstitute.co.za), requires applications for COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS* to work on a Fixed Term Contract.
 
The Allergy and Immunology Unit was established in 2000 to provide state of the art clinical and laboratory services for the diagnosis and management of allergic and immune-based diseased, with a mission to transform lives of patients through innovate science and compassionate care.
 
The successful incumbent will be working on vaccine-related clinical trials and will be possible for screening and recruiting new trial participants as well as supporting trial participants during the trial.

POSITION INFO:
Minimum Requirements:

• Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate or Equivalent
• Experience in a clinic / health care environment/Paediatrics (or baby clinic)
• Sound knowledge of recruiting area (Masiphumelele)
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Fluent in English and another South African Language
• Valid Driver’s License (advantageous)
• Computer Literacy (MS Office, Internet and electronic Data Management Systems advantageous

• Recruitment, screening and consenting of study participants in the community
• Retention and follow-up of study participants (to attend appointments)
• Assist participants in maintaining asthma diaries to track symptoms and triggers
• Guide participants in self-monitoring techniques and provide education on maintaining health records
• Do home visits to participants
• Keep Research Nurse informed of participants and report any irregularities
• Data Collection and administrative duties - questionnaires, data entry and verification
• Maintain database of participant information and complete participant progress reports as required
• Provide education and support to participants during the screening process
• Educate participants on the studies
• Drive to destinations to drop off and / or collect participants and /or documents as instructed by line manager
• Ensure correct handling and transport of specimens to the relevant laboratories.
• Set up and manage air quality monitors (personal and household) and community-based spore trap

• 12-month Fixed Term Contract
• Working hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
