Job Title: Truck Gearbox Builder / Rebuilder (Commercial)
Job Purpose
The Truck Gearbox Builder will be responsible for stripping, diagnosing, rebuilding, and assembling heavy-duty truck gearboxes to Mayfair Gearbox quality standards. The role requires strong technical ability, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently to meet turnaround times while ensuring reliable workmanship and minimal comebacks.
Key Responsibilities
Gearbox Stripping & Fault Finding
Identify faults, worn components, and internal damage.
Inspect gears, bearings, shafts, synchros, selector forks, housings, and related components.
Provide accurate feedback to the foreman/service advisor for quoting purposes.
Gearbox Rebuilding & Assembly
Rebuild and assemble truck gearboxes according to Mayfair Gearbox standards and OEM specifications.
Replace worn components including bearings, seals, gaskets, synchros, gears, and shafts where required.
Ensure correct setting of tolerances such as end float, preload, and backlash where applicable.
Use correct torque specifications and assembly procedures.
Range/Splitter and Air System Work
Diagnose and repair range change and splitter systems.
Inspect and repair gearbox air systems, actuators, valves, and related components.
Ensure correct functionality of pneumatic components during assembly and testing.
Quality Control & Testing
Conduct final inspections before closing gearbox casings.
Perform functional testing to confirm smooth gear engagement and correct operation.
Ensure workmanship meets quality standards and prevents repeat failures (comebacks).
Report any additional faults discovered during rebuild to management.
Workshop Support & General Duties
Maintain cleanliness and organisation of work area.
Ensure tools and special tools are used correctly and returned after use.
Assist with gearbox removals/refits when required.
Work closely with the foreman and technicians to ensure workshop efficiency.
Health & Safety Compliance
Follow all health and safety policies and procedures.
Ensure safe use of workshop machinery, presses, lifting equipment, and tools.
Wear PPE at all times and maintain a safe working environment.
Minimum Requirements
Matric / Grade 12 (preferred).
Minimum 5–10 years experience as a truck gearbox builder/rebuilder (essential).
Proven experience working on heavy-duty commercial gearboxes (manual and/or automated).
Strong understanding of gearbox components, tolerances, and rebuilding procedures.
Strong understanding of Allisson,ZF and Isuzu Gearbox
Experience with range/splitter gearboxes and air shift systems (advantage).
Valid driver’s license (advantage).
Technical Knowledge Required
Heavy-duty truck gearbox stripping and rebuilding.
Bearing replacement, seals, gaskets, and component inspection.
Use of workshop tools including presses, pullers, torque wrenches, and dial gauges.
Understanding of common gearbox failures and how to prevent them.
Ability to interpret technical manuals and follow OEM rebuild standards.
