The President Hotel in Cape Town is seeking an experienced and exceptionally knowledgeable Sommelier to elevate its wine service and enhance the overall guest dining experience. As the hotel continues its transformation into one of Cape Town’s leading luxury destinations, we are looking for a wine professional who combines deep expertise with warm, refined hospitality.
At The President Hotel, wine is more than a beverage - it is a story of craftsmanship, terroir, and time. We are looking for a Sommelier who can bring that story to life through expert pairings, curated wine selections, and polished, intuitive guest interaction.
What We Are Looking For:
A highly skilled Sommelier who brings expert wine knowledge, luxury service finesse, and genuine passion to every table.
Minimum Requirements
• Valid South African ID or work permit
• Matric (Grade 12)
• Recognised wine qualification: WSET Level 2 or 3, Cape Wine Academy Diploma, or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years’ recent Sommelier experience in a luxury hotel, fine dining restaurant, or premium wine estate
• Exceptional knowledge of South African and international wines, varietals, terroirs, appellations, and vintages
• Strong tasting ability with refined palate descriptors and pairing expertise
• Confident, polished service presence with excellent guest interaction skills
• Ability to train, mentor, and uplift service teams in wine theory and service technique
• Familiarity with Micros POS and wine inventory management systems
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays
What You Will Do:
• Curate, balance, and manage a refined and innovative wine list
• Guide guests with expert recommendations on wines, vintages, and pairings
• Conduct wine tastings, guest experiences, activations, and educational events
• Collaborate with the Executive Chef on customised pairing menus and signature offerings
• Train and develop the Food & Beverage team in wine knowledge and service standards
• Ensure correct storage, rotation, cellar organisation, and accurate stock control
• Build and maintain relationships with wine suppliers, distributors, and estates
• Increase revenue through upselling, premium wine promotions, and exclusive offerings
• Uphold strict hygiene, safety, and operational standards
