As The President continues its exciting transformation into one of Cape Town’s leading luxury destinations, we’re seeking an experienced and passionate Sommelier to join our Food and Beverage team. This role calls for a professional who combines deep wine knowledge with genuine hospitality and an eye for detail.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a refined service professional who lives and breathes wine, hospitality, and excellence.
The ideal Sommelier will have:
- A valid South African ID or work permit
- A Matric certificate (Grade 12)
- A recognised wine qualification such as WSET Level 2 or 3, Cape Wine Academy Diploma, or equivalent
- At least 3 years recent experience as a Sommelier in a luxury hotel, fine dining restaurant, or wine estate
- Comprehensive knowledge of South African and international wines, varietals, and terroirs
- Excellent service and presentation skills with an approachable, confident manner
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage guests and share expertise with warmth and professionalism
- The ability to train, mentor, and inspire service teams in wine knowledge and pairing techniques
- Familiarity with Micros or other POS systems and inventory management
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays
What You’ll Do
- Curate and manage the hotel’s wine list, ensuring selections reflect quality, balance, and value
- Provide expert guidance and recommendations to guests on wine pairings, vintages, and tasting notes
- Conduct wine tastings and support the Food and Beverage team in enhancing the overall guest experience
- Collaborate closely with the Executive Chef to design pairings that complement menu changes and special events
- Train and motivate service staff on wine knowledge, service standards, and guest engagement
- Maintain optimal wine storage conditions and accurate stock records
- Contribute to revenue growth through suggestive selling, promotions, and the introduction of exclusive offerings
- Uphold all hygiene, health, and safety standards in line with company policy
