POSITION INFO:
Job Description: Section Engineer - Gas
Location: Limpopo, Waterberg District, Lephalale
Job Type: 6 monthsContract, expected to work Full-Time hours
Job Duties:
- Legal and Regulatory Compliance
- Assume full legal accountability as the appointed 2.13.1 Engineer in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
- Ensure full compliance with all relevant MHSA provisions, including Mandatory Codes of Practice (COP) for the prevention of flammable gas and explosion risks.
- Maintain compliance with all safety, environmental, and operational regulations governing gas-related activities.
- Safety Management
- Take all reasonable measures to ensure the safe installation, operation, maintenance, and running of:
- Well development and construction equipment.
- Gas processing equipment.
- Pipelines and power generation systems.
- Electrical equipment and infrastructure.
- Implement a robust safety management system to prevent incidents in a gas-rich environment.
- Conduct and approve Job Risk Assessments (JRAs) prior to any maintenance or operational activity.
- Equipment Integrity and Maintenance
- Oversee both planned and unplanned maintenance of all production and gas-related equipment to align with prescribed standards.
- Conduct regular inspections, audits, and integrity checks on all machinery and safety systems.
- Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance schedules that consider gas-specific risks.
- Ensure safety appliances, guards, and protective mechanisms are functional and in good condition.
- Risk Mitigation
- Implement and enforce risk management programs to identify, assess, and control hazards related to machinery and gas operations.
- Possess the authority to stop the operation of any machinery or equipment that poses imminent danger.
- Investigate and report on machinery-related incidents in line with MHSA requirements.
Technical Oversight

- Provide technical direction and supervision to engineering and maintenance teams.
- Ensure effective resource planning, scheduling, and execution of maintenance activities.
- Approve and maintain the equipment register in the ERP system, ensuring accuracy and up-to-date asset data.
Project Implementation

- Liaise with Project Engineers to ensure the safe and successful implementation of gas project-related capital works.Support project planning, resource allocation, and integration of new or modified equipment.
- Performance Monitoring
- Track and manage section Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as downtime, availability, and maintenance costs.
- Conduct asset criticality assessments and approve appropriate maintenance tactics.Review performance trends, identify improvement opportunities, and implement corrective measures.
- Change Management
- Oversee the Management of Change (MOC) process for all system or asset modifications.
- Ensure changes are reviewed, documented, and assessed for safety and operational impact.
- Collaborate with relevant teams to implement mitigation measures for identified risks.
- Resource and Budget Management
- Manage engineering budgets effectively to support operational and maintenance objectives.
- Optimise the allocation of manpower, tools, and materials for maximum efficiency.
Education:
- A Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) for Mines and Works (Mechanical or Electrical).
- A bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (BEng, BTech, or equivalent).
- Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) is highly advantageous.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5-10 years of post-qualification experience in a relevant engineering role on a mine or industrial works, with at least 3 years in a management or supervisory capacity.
- Experience in a gas or petrochemical environment would be an added benefit.
- A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the MHSA, its regulations, and specific Codes of Practice relating to flammable gas.
