SHER Co-ordinator

SUMMARY:
Our Pinetown Food Manufacturing client requires a SHER Co-Ordinator to implement SHER, and act as system owner for Waste Management across various sites. The role focuses on risk assessments, waste management, training/awareness, inspections, incident follow‑up, emergency preparedness and basic security coordination.
                                                                                                                                 

POSITION INFO:
Key Responsibilities:

SHER Implementation

• Implement the SHER and ISO 45001 / 14001 systems.
• Ensure risk assessments are in place and current for warehousing, factory, logistics and traffic.
• Coordinate incident, hazard and near‑miss reporting and investigations; track corrective actions.
• Conduct routine safety / housekeeping inspections and participate in the SHER Committees.

• Develop and maintain the waste management procedure and standards.
• Support the sites to implement effective segregation, recycling and compliant disposal.
• Liaise with waste service providers and monitor waste KPIs.

• Collaborate with the Training Coordinator to Maintain the SHER training matrix .
• Coordinate SHER inductions, refresher training and toolbox talks.
• Drive SHER awareness campaigns and support a positive safety culture.

• Maintain environmental aspect/impact assessments .
• Implement waste and environmental controls.
• Coordinate emergency teams, including training and appointment management.
• Plan and document emergency drills and ensure fire equipment/first aid boxes are checked and serviced.

• Act as contact for the security provider.
• Support security incident investigations.
• Implement the contractor management process.

• Grade 12 with a relevant post-matric qualification in Safety, Environmental, Engineering or equivalent.
• Relevant SHER / HSE qualification or courses (e.g. HIRA, Incident Investigation, SAMTRAC/NEBOSH) – essential/strong advantage.
• Environmental / waste‑related training – advantageous.

• 1-3 years in a SHER / SHEQ / HSE Coordinator or Officer role, ideally in manufacturing, warehousing or logistics.
• Practical experience with:
• Risk assessments and inspections
• Waste management / recycling programmes
• Training / toolbox talks
• Incident/near‑miss investigations
• Exposure to ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 (implementation or maintenance).
• Experience working with contractors and Permit to Work systems – advantageous.
• Exposure to basic security coordination and/or CCTV in investigations – advantageous.

• Strong working knowledge of SHEQ legislation, risk management and incident investigation.

• Able to conduct and interpret risk and aspect/impact assessments.
• Confident communication and training / facilitation skills.
• Strong organisation, follow‑through and documentation skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Proactive, hands‑on, visible in operations; able to influence and gain buy‑in.
• Calm and methodical under pressure.
• Computer literate (MS Office; any SHEQ system exposure is a plus).

• Legally entitled to work in South Africa.
• Medically fit for an industrial/warehouse environment and participation in emergency drills.
• Driver’s licence and own transport – advantageous.
