SCADA Engineer (Substation Automation Systems – SAS)

SCADA Engineer | Substation Automation (SAS) | IEC 61850 | RTU | IED | Testing & Commissioning

POSITION INFO:

Our client is seeking a technically strong SCADA Engineer to support the full lifecycle of Substation Automation Systems (SAS) across generation and distribution projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, configuration, testing, and commissioning of SCADA and automation systems, while working closely within a Secondary Plant engineering team.

This role offers exposure to a broad range of technologies including HMI systems, telecontrol applications, industrial communications, and cybersecurity in substation environments.

Key Responsibilities

SCADA & SAS Design

• Develop concept and basic designs for MV and HV power distribution networks
• Support planning and design of substation automation and control systems
• Design and configure:
  • HMI systems
  • Gateways and RTUs
  • ODF and communication panels

Configuration, Testing & Commissioning

• Configure, test, and commission:
  • SCADA / HMI systems (e.g. SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens)
  • Substation gateways and RTUs
  • Serial and Ethernet communication networks
• Configure and commission protection relays, including communication and time synchronisation parameters
• Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
• Provide on-site support during pre-commissioning and commissioning activities

Networks & Automation

• Implement and support industrial communication networks, including:
  • TCP/IP, VLANs, RSTP
  • Routers, firewalls, VPNs, IPSec
• Program and configure automation logic using IEC 61131-3 platforms
• Support secure remote access and cybersecurity requirements within substation environments

 Engineering & Project Support

• Assist with preparation of:
  • Technical specifications
  • BOQs and design documentation
  • Detailed design packages and architecture drawings
• Support drafting teams with:
  • Communication architecture layouts
  • SLDs and schematics
• Coordinate with OEMs, suppliers, and contractors to ensure compliance with specifications

Stakeholder & Site Engagement

• Participate in technical reviews of third-party designs
• Attend and contribute to technical and site meetings
• Conduct site assessments and audits
• Provide engineering support during construction phases

Business & Team Support

• Assist with preparation of:
  • Tenders and proposals
  • Expressions of Interest (EOIs)
• Participate in knowledge sharing and internal initiatives
• Maintain compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards

Minimum Requirements

• BSc Eng / BEng in Electrical Engineering
• 3 – 5 years’ experience in:
  • SCADA / SAS design
  • Substation automation systems (generation or distribution)

Technical Skills & Experience

• Experience with:
  • SCADA systems, HMIs, RTUs, and gateways
  • Serial and Ethernet network configuration and troubleshooting
  • Fiber optic communication systems
• Knowledge of:
  • Substation communication protocols and network design
• Proficiency in:
  • AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Advantageous Experience

• Exposure to:
  • Eskom or renewable energy SCADA systems
  • Consulting or EPC environments
  • Renewable energy projects (Solar PV, Wind, BESS)
