JOB DESCRIPTION:

Product Designer and Developer

Our client is seeking to employ the services of a Product Designer and Developer within the Paarden Eiland area in Cape Town.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
• Relevant tertiary education e.g., product design or relevant work experience
• At least x years in the product design field, and skilled in the following areas:
• 2D technical drawings and 3D models using the relevant software (proficiency in Rhino 3D an advantage)
• Renderings and illustrations using the relevant software (proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Procreate an advantage)
• 3D prototyping by means of physical sculpting in various media
• 3D rapid prototyping (knowlege of 3D scanning and printing)
• Wide knowledge of a variety of material and production methods
• Ability to sensitively interpret and develop another designer’s work, adopting their style.
• Experience in sourcing and buying from local and international suppliers
• Experience in sampling and manufacturing with local and international manufacturers
• Experience in the home-wares field
• Ability to project-manage a product from conception to market-readiness, including all phases such as costing, packaging, etc
• Good business-writing skills
• Ability to multi-task and learn new skills as required
• Must be organised and pay attention to detail
• Ability to work accurately
• Creative problem-solver willing to take initiative

JOB TASKS/ KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Product development, product design, buying and project management in the field of homewares such as cutlery, crockery, glassware, cookware, hydration, soft furnishings, bedding, furniture and lighting, also personal accessories. This includes the following
Range Planning
• Quarterly range review
• Conceptualizing and planning new additions to the range.
• Prioritization of new or redeveloped products according to range review
Design and prototyping
• Designing products.
• Technical drawing (2D and 3D).
• Rendering.
• Illustration.
• 3D scanning and printing.
• The above using Rhino3D, Illustrator, Photoshop and Procreate and other software.
• Physical prototyping: Creating prototypes of new items by means of sculpting in various media.
Product maintenance
• Repairing, re-sculpting or re-drawing items due for upgrading or sending to a new supplier.
• Liaising with suppliers for new samples and production of the above.
• Addressing quality issues with relevant parties.
Buying
• Sourcing manufacturers to produce new and existing items.
• Liaising with them, sending drawings, prototypes and technical instructions, packaging details etc.
• Creating purchase orders.
• Making sure samples/die fees are paid for.
• Negotiating production prices.
• Checking samples, making changes/ communicating changes to supplier until sample is ready for production.
• Liaising with existing suppliers to produce new items (as above).
• Sourcing and initial purchasing of new components for new designs.
• Comparison shopping
• Costing and pricing of new products.
Product project management
• Briefing packaging, labelling, swing tags, instruction cards, care cards, stickers, etc to Graphics department or to the supplier.
• Providing Graphics with samples to photograph.
• Creating product information: Weight, materials, dimensions, volume, components, assembly instructions, care instructions, all supplier details, all assembly details, etc.
• Creating specification sheets with the above data for internal and external use
• Supplying all product data, selling points, product attributes to copywriter
• Supplying data capturer with sample products and all product information mentioned above as well as selling points, copy, etc, for item card details and product Bulletin.
• Product shipment quality checking and creation of shipment inspection reports
• Providing feedback to manufacturers re technical issues.
• Informing the relevant staff re the above QC feedback.
Bespoke items project management
• Product design.
• Presentation drawings.
• Getting supplier quotes.
• Doing product costings.
• Planning.
• Overseeing production, packaging, packing, shipping on time.

Archiving and organizing
• Labelling and packing items for archiving, moving boxes to archives, organizing art dept project spaces. Management of samples in various areas.

SALARY: R25 000- R45 000 per month depending on skills and experience
