A leading organisation in the metals and commodities sector is seeking an experienced Operations/Logistics Manager ((metals, copper, or commodities trading industry) with strong logistics expertise and solid financial understanding. The company focuses on the trading, transportation, and distribution of metals and related materials across Southern Africa and beyond. The Operations Manager will oversee end-to-end logistics, supply chain, and operational functions, ensuring smooth material flow, supplier coordination, and cost-effective transport and warehousing. The role will also support financial oversight, including budgeting, cost control, and reporting, while maintaining close alignment with trading and finance teams to ensure accuracy, profitability, and compliance.
This position requires a hands-on, analytical individual who can manage multiple moving parts, build strong supplier relationships, and optimise operational and financial performance.
DUTIES:
Logistics & Operations Management
- Manage inbound and outbound logistics, including supplier collections, transportation, warehousing, and delivery.
- Oversee logistics service providers, transporters, and warehouse operators, ensuring optimal performance and cost efficiency.
- Coordinate with procurement and trading teams to schedule shipments and manage inventory flow.
- Conduct supplier and site visits to verify standards, resolve operational issues, and identify process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and regulatory standards within the metals and mining sector.
- Monitor and improve KPIs such as transport efficiency, delivery timelines, and cost per tonne.
- Negotiate and manage contracts with logistics and warehousing partners.
- Oversee stock control, dispatch documentation, and operational reporting.
- Lead and develop a small operations team, promoting continuous improvement in efficiency and accuracy.
Finance & Trading-Related Duties
- The ideal candidate will combine logistics strength with sound financial knowledge to support trading operations effectively.
Operational Finance & Cost Control
- Prepare and monitor logistics and operations budgets, including transport, storage, and handling costs.
- Track expenses, analyse variances, and identify opportunities for cost optimisation.
- Collaborate with finance teams to ensure accurate cost allocation and timely reporting.
- Contribute to monthly management accounts and assist with financial forecasting.
- Implement and maintain operational cost controls and authorisation processes.
- Provide financial insight on operational decisions to safeguard margins and improve profitability.
Working Capital & Cash Flow Awareness
- Understand how stock movements, shipping timelines, and payment terms impact cash flow.
- Assist in forecasting operational cash flow and ensuring efficient working capital usage.
- Track costs tied to materials in transit or storage and report on cash implications.
Pricing, Margin & Risk Management
- Understand how logistics costs (freight, insurance, duties) influence product pricing and trading margins.
- Support landed cost calculations and ensure full cost visibility for each shipment.
- Identify and mitigate risks related to FX exposure, freight rates, and supplier performance.
- Contribute to internal control improvements and ensure all operational transactions are financially auditable.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Operations Management, Business, or Finance.
- 3-5 years’ experience in operations or logistics management, ideally within the metals, copper, or commodities trading industry.
- Proven experience managing logistics networks and costs in a trading or manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of trade finance, letters of credit, import/export documentation, and cost reconciliation.
- Strong financial understanding — able to prepare budgets, analyse cost reports, and support management accounts.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel as required.
