Laboratory Technician x 2 (6 Months FTC) vacancies are available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in Sandringham, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is a major global player in infectious disease intelligence. The NICD is a source of knowledge and expertise in regionally relevant communicable diseases to the South African Government, SADC countries and the African continent. The NICD assists in the planning of policies and programmes and supports appropriate responses to communicable disease problems and issues.
Main purpose of the job
- To receive clinical samples and perform routine medical laboratory tests according to Standard Operating procedures (SOP’s)
Location
- NICD, Sandringham, Johannesburg
Key performance areas
- Daily maintenance of laboratory machines in order to avoid unnecessary shut-down times and service interruptions
- Run required quality control procedure to ensure that accurate results are generated
- Receive, label, prepare, process and store clinical specimen as required to ensure suitability for assays to be carried out
- Carry out routine testing procedures on specimens in order to obtain accurate results under the general supervision of senior qualified staff
- Retrieval of specimens from freezers as requested
- Maintained storage logs
- Maintaining samples storage logs
- Observe health and safety regulations while working to ensure own and others’ safety at all times
- Input data into databases and LIMS systems for later retrieval and analysis
Required minimum education and training
- Grade 12
- HPCSA registration as a medical technician
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- General health and safety knowledge for working in a laboratory
- Knowledge of technical appliances
- Knowledge of quality control procedures
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel required
- Troubleshooting skills
- Attention to detail
- Knowledge of equipment used during the specimen receiving process (e.g. pipettes, centrifuges, biosafety cabinet)

Required minimum work experience
- 1-3 years’ experience in a laboratory environment
