Junior WordPress & Digital Design Specialist (6 month contract)

SUMMARY:
Role: Junior Graphic Designer (Digital) / WordPress Developer (6-month contract)
Location: Cape Town (office based)
 
Our client is a dynamic Outsourcing company who fall under the umbrella of a large international holding company. They are looking for a Digital Designer who specialises in maintaining and scaling complex WordPress sites. With over 20 unique sites under management, they deliver reliable, secure, and high-performance web experiences.
 
As a Junior WordPress Maintenance Developer, you will support their portfolio of WordPress sites, handling updates, troubleshooting, staging deployments, and light customizations. You will collaborate with senior developers to implement best practices and ensure 24/7 site reliability.

POSITION INFO:
Requirements:
1+ Year WordPress Experience.
2+ Year Graphic Design Experience.
strong eye for design and basic graphic skills: Familiarity with Adobe suite and Figma
You will be required to show your graphic design portfolio showcasing your work
Familiarity with DirectAdmin hosting panel: sub-domain setup, DNS, SSL via Let’s Encrypt.
Proficiency with WP-CLI, Git, and command-line operations.
Basic theming knowledge: CSS, child themes, enqueueing scripts.
Experience with staging workflows and zero-downtime deployments.
Understanding of backup strategies, DB export/import, and security best practices.
Strong troubleshooting skills for PHP, SQL, and front-end asset issues.
Good communication and documentation skills.
Demonstrable graphic design skills and portfolio: Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, etc. (You will be required to show your graphic design portfolio)
 
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine WordPress core, theme, and plugin updates safely across multiple environments.
- Create graphical designs with a focus on ads and Hero section images.
- Create and manage staging environments and deploy changes to production with zero downtime.
- Implement and maintain backup, security, and performance optimization measures.
- Troubleshoot and resolve front-end and back-end issues, including PHP errors and database queries.
- Collaborate on theming tasks: CSS tweaks, script enqueueing, and template adjustments.
- Utilize WP-CLI, Git, and DirectAdmin for efficient workflow and automation.
- Assist with SSL certificate issuance and renewal in DirectAdmin.
- Document processes, maintain runbooks, and communicate status updates.
 
Additional skills which are not required but would be advantageous:
- Graphical skills almost at an Intermediate Level.
- Performance optimization (caching, critical CSS, Core Web Vitals).
- Security hardening and malware remediation experience.
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions.
- Multi-site WordPress setup knowledge.
- Basic PHP and JavaScript customization skills.
