JUNIOR SYSTEMS SECURITY ENGINEER

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic individual, with a keen interest in Cyber security to join our Systems Team. This person will need to have strong experience in networking and / or programming with excellent troubleshooting skills. This is a remote working role, but travel to Stellenbosch and other areas will be required from time to time. The individual will report to the Head of Infrastructure and Security.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Junior Systems Security Engineer will be responsible for the monitoring of systems and applications, including threat hunting and the implementation of security recommendations in accordance with industry best practice.

Key Responsibility Areas:

• Regularly perform security checks and troubleshooting.
• Monitor Information Security industry trends and advises the team of critical information updates.
• Assist with project initiatives to research, validate, and manage Information Security vendors and products to ensure robust detection, prevention, and monitoring tools are in place.
• Assist with implementing new processes with the goal to optimize the companies security landscape.
• Review and provide insight into any security issues identified.
• Initiates cyber security investigations providing summaries and recommendations to resolve the matter.
• Works closely with IT and project teams to ensure that new projects meet or exceed information security requirements.
• Become familiar with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices such as POPI, GDPR, etc ensuring the Information Security Program is held to the highest standard.
• Assist with the implementation of Information Security projects to align with organizational strategic objectives, goals, and risk tolerance.

The successful candidate must have the following experience/skills: -

• At least 2-years server administration and networking experience OR equivalent programming  experience.
• Previous exposure to Linux and Windows Operating Systems is required.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure, i.e. Azure and AWS is advantageous.
• Experience supporting SIEM technologies is advantageous.
• Experience with standards and best practices such as ISO27001, POPIA, GDPR & SOC 2
• compliance is advantageous.
• Required demonstrated knowledge of information technology security trends and leading best practices is advantageous.
• Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and projects.
• Able to work in a high-pressure environment is required.
• Be self-motivated and be willing to go the extra mile is required.
• Basic programming knowledge is required.
• Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work in a team environment is required.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written communications is required.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality is required.
• Technically proficient in IT and Information Security controls and concepts is advantageous.
• Strong organizational and planning skills is required.

Qualifications

• Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field is required.
• Certifications in Information or Cyber Security is advantageous.
