Job Description
The General Manager North West is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction and operational management of hospitality and tourism services within the North West region, specifically the Bojanala Platinum District in Madikwe. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality guest experiences while maintaining profitability, compliance with industry standards, and alignment with organisational goals. The General Manager leads the development and implementation of business strategies, manages resources efficiently, and fosters positive relationships with key stakeholders including clients, suppliers and local communities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and execute strategic business plans to achieve revenue, profitability and growth targets within the North West region.
- Oversee daily operations across multiple hospitality and tourism facilities, ensuring exceptional service standards and guest satisfaction.
- Lead, mentor and manage a diverse team, promoting a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Manage financial performance by preparing budgets, monitoring expenses, analysing financial reports and implementing cost control measures.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, licencing requirements and environmental standards.
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with local authorities, tourism boards, community organisations and business partners.
- Identify market trends and opportunities, adapting services and marketing strategies accordingly to maintain competitiveness.
- Oversee recruitment, training and development initiatives to attract and retain skilled personnel.
- Resolve operational issues promptly and effectively, maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Prepare comprehensive reports for senior management and stakeholders, highlighting performance, challenges and recommendations.
- Promote sustainable tourism practises that support environmental conservation and community engagement.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, Tourism or a related discipline.
- Valid driver’s licence suitable for the region and role requirements.
Required Experience
- Minimum of seven years’ experience in senior management roles within the travel, leisure, tourism or hospitality sectors.
- Proven track record of successfully managing multi-site operations and delivering financial targets.
- Experience working in or with communities in the North West region or similar rural environments is advantageous.
Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of hospitality and tourism industry standards, trends and best practises.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff.
- Excellent financial acumen including budgeting, forecasting and cost control.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a dynamic environment.
- Proficient in the use of business management software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in Business Management, Tourism or related field.
- Additional training or certification in sustainable tourism or environmental management.
- Experience in marketing and brand development within the tourism sector.
Working Conditions
- The role is based in the North West region, requiring frequent travel within the Bojanala Platinum District and surrounding areas.
- Work hours are full-time and may include weekends, public holidays and occasional evening commitments depending on operational demands.
- Work is performed in a combination of office settings and outdoor environments, including lodges and tourism facilities.
- The position may require occasional overnight stays and attendance at industry events or meetings outside of regular working hours.
