General Assistants-Retail

SUMMARY:
A leading client in the retail sector is seeking to appoint General Assistants to join their team in Pietermaritzburg, Newholmes. Opportunities are available within the Fruit & Veg Department and the Receiving Department. We are looking for reliable, hardworking, and physically fit individuals who can operate effectively in a fast-paced retail environment. The ideal candidates will have prior retail experience, strong attention to detail, and a hands-on approach to stock handling and store operations.

POSITION INFO:

Responsibilities: 

Fruit & Veg Department (Fresh Produce):

• Experience working with fresh produce and perishables is essential
• Receive, unpack, and merchandise fruit and vegetables according to store standards
• Ensure proper stock rotation (FIFO) to maintain freshness and reduce waste
• Monitor product quality and remove damaged or expired stock
• Maintain high hygiene and cleanliness standards in line with food safety regulations
• Assist customers with product selection and general queries

Receiving Department:

• Experience in receiving, checking, and handling incoming stock
• Verify deliveries against invoices and delivery notes
• Identify and report any discrepancies, damages, or shortages
• Accurately record received goods and maintain proper documentation
• Offload, move, and store stock safely in designated areas
• Assist with stock counts and ensure organised storage areas.

Key Responsibilities (Across Both Roles):

• Support daily store operations and ensure efficiency in your department
• Maintain cleanliness, organisation, and safety standards
• Handle stock with care to prevent damage or loss
• Work collaboratively with team members and supervisors
• Deliver a high standard of service to internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements:

• Grade 12 / Matric (advantageous)
• Minimum of 1–2 years’ experience in a retail environment
• Physically fit and able to lift and move stock
• Willingness to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• Strong work ethic and reliability.
