Field Guide

SUMMARY:
A Field Guide at a 5-star game lodge in the Kruger National Park is responsible for delivering exceptional safari experiences while ensuring guest safety, wildlife conservation, and luxury hospitality standards. The role combines wildlife expertise, guiding, storytelling, conservation awareness, and guest relations.
Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct morning and afternoon game drives
• Lead guided bush walks and walking safaris (where qualified)
• Interpret wildlife behavior, birdlife, flora, fauna, and ecosystems to guests
• Provide educational and engaging safari experiences
• Ensure the safety and comfort of guests during all activities
• Host guests professionally and create memorable experiences
• Assist with lodge hosting duties, guest check-ins, and orientation
• Maintain safari vehicles, radios, rifles, and guiding equipment
• Perform vehicle checks, cleaning, and basic maintenance
• Follow reserve rules, safety procedures, and conservation protocols
• Assist with bush clearing, reserve maintenance, and veld management
• Report sightings, incidents, and environmental concerns
• Support anti-poaching awareness and conservation initiatives
• Coordinate with lodge departments regarding guest needs and schedules
• Assist with transfers and other lodge operational duties when required
• Maintain accurate guiding logs, compliance records, and reports
• Mentor junior guides or trainees where applicable
• Uphold the lodge’s luxury service standards and brand image

POSITION INFO:
Required Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Matric
• FGASA Field Guide qualification (typically NQF Level 2 or NQF Level 4)
• DEAT / NDT / LEDET registration depending on province
• Valid South African driver’s license
• Valid PDP (Professional Driving Permit)
• Valid First Aid Certificate
• ARH (Advanced Rifle Handling) certification
• Backup Trails or Lead Trails qualification advantageous
• Firearm competency certificate advantageous
• Wilderness First Aid advantageous
• Hospitality or tourism qualifications beneficial

• 2–4 years’ experience in a Big 5 reserve or luxury lodge environment
• Previous experience conducting game drives and bush walks
• Experience interacting with international guests
• Knowledge of wildlife tracking and animal behavior
• Experience in luxury hospitality environments advantageous
