POSITION INFO:
Company and Job Description:
Maintain, fault-find, and repair electrical systems on underground Trackless Mobile Machinery (TMM)—including LHDs, Drill Rigs, Bolters, Utility Vehicles, and Diesel/Electro-hydraulic equipment—to ensure safe, reliable, and optimal availability in line with MHSA, mine standards, and OEM specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Electrical Maintenance & Repair
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain 12/24V DC systems, starters/alternators, wiring harnesses, batteries, lighting, and electrical auxiliaries on TMM.
- Fault-find and repair CANbus, electronic control modules (ECMs), sensor networks, HMI panels, interlocks, and protection devices.
- Perform maintenance on electro-hydraulic control systems, proportional valves, solenoids, and joysticks.
- Support VSD/inverter and PLC (basic I/O) fault finding where applicable (OEM-dependent).
- Maintain charging systems, isolation/lockout, and emergency shutdown circuits.
- OEM & Equipment
- Work across fleets such as Sandvik, Epiroc/Atlas Copco, AARD, Bell, Caterpillar, Komatsu (insert site-specific OEMs).
- Interpret OEM manuals, electrical schematics, and diagnostic codes; use OEM diagnostics (e.g., ET, VCADS, SIS, as applicable).
- Flameproofing & Compliance
- Inspect and maintain flameproof/Ex electrical equipment (where applicable)—glands, enclosures, and IP ratings.
- Ensure compliance with mine standards, MHSA, TMM Regulations, and OEM safety bulletins.
- Preventive Maintenance
- Execute PM schedules, inspections, condition monitoring, and defect elimination on TMM.
- Maintain accurate service records, parts usage, and job cards in CMMS.
- Breakdowns & Callouts
- Respond to underground breakdowns swiftly; perform root-cause analysis; complete risk assessments and LOTO before work.
- Quality & Safety
- Adhere to SHEQ standards; conduct SLAM/Take 5, toolbox talks, and ensure proper PPE use.
- Participate in continuous improvement (MTBF/MTTR improvements, standard work).
- Stakeholder & Teamwork
- Liaise with operators, planners, and foremen; provide feedback for planning and spares.
- Mentor learners/apprentices and support skills transfer.
Job Experience & Skills Required (Ideal Candidate Profile):
- Trade Test (Auto Electrician) – Red Seal (Section 13 or Section 26D).
- N2/N3 Electrical/Auto Electrical (N4/N6 advantageous).
- Underground mining experience: 3–5+ years, specifically on TMM (LHDs, drill rigs, bolters).
- Proven competency with:
- 12/24V DC systems, CANbus diagnostics, wiring & harness repair.
- Electro-hydraulics and controls on TMM.
- Basic PLC/VSD diagnostics (site/OEM dependent).
- Computer literacy with exposure to OEM diagnostic tools and CMMS (e.g., SAP/Pragma).
- Medically fit for underground work; valid Driver’s License.
- Legal & Safety: Familiarity with MHSA, TMM Regulations, Lock-Out/Tag-Out, Risk Assessments.

- Exposure to Ex/Flameproof standards and mining SANS codes.
