Cost Accountant

SUMMARY:
A listed multinational mining group is seeking a technically strong Cost Accountant to join their finance team in Johannesburg South. This role suits a detail-oriented finance professional with strong manufacturing or mining exposure, experience in ABC costing, BOMs, and WIP, and the ability to analyse large volumes of operational data in a project-based environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in cost control, profitability analysis, and operational financial reporting.

POSITION INFO:
Our client, a globally recognised and listed mining company, is expanding its finance capability and is looking for a Cost Accountant to support operational and project costing across the business.

Working closely with operations, projects, and finance leadership, this role will take ownership of cost analysis, reporting, and financial insights that drive operational performance. The environment is highly analytical and operationally focused, requiring someone comfortable working with large datasets, complex costing structures, and production metrics.

This position offers exposure to a large-scale mining operation, where accurate costing, inventory tracking, and project financial management are critical to business performance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Full cost accounting function within a mining or production environment
• Activity-Based Costing (ABC) analysis and cost allocation across operations
• Maintain and analyse Bills of Materials (BOMs) and Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules
• Monitor standard vs actual cost variances and investigate deviations
• Prepare detailed cost and profitability analysis across projects and operational units
• Support project costing and financial tracking in a project-driven environment
• Perform inventory valuation and production cost analysis
• Analyse cost drivers and operational efficiencies to support management decision-making
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning for operational projects
• Prepare cost reports and dashboards for finance and operational leadership
• Work closely with operations to ensure accurate cost capture and allocation
• Support month-end processes including cost journals, reconciliations, and reporting

• BCom Accounting / Finance degree essential
• CIMA (or working toward completion) advantageous
• 3+ years’ experience in a cost accounting role
• Experience within mining, manufacturing, or FMCG environments
• Strong exposure to ABC costing, BOMs, WIP, and production costing
• Experience working in a project-based or operational environment
• Strong variance analysis and profitability analysis capability
• Advanced Excel and data analysis skills
• SAP experience essential
• Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret large volumes of financial and operational data
• Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and finance teams
