CNC Setter

Job Purpose

Key Responsibilities

• Set up CNC lathes, milling machines, or machining centres for production.
• Select and install appropriate cutting tools, inserts, fixtures, and work-holding equipment.
• Load and adjust CNC programs as required.
• Set machine offsets, tool heights, work coordinates, and cutting parameters.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and machining specifications.
• Produce first-off components and conduct dimensional checks.
• Use measuring equipment such as verniers, micrometers, bore gauges, and height gauges.
• Monitor machine operation and make adjustments to maintain component quality.
• Identify tooling, machine, and production problems and take corrective action.
• Complete production and inspection documentation accurately.
• Maintain tooling, machines, and work areas in good condition.
• Follow company health and safety procedures and quality requirements.
• Minimise scrap, machine downtime, and material wastage.
• Assist operators and junior machinists with technical guidance where required.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent.
• CNC machining qualification or relevant technical training.
• 2–5 years' experience as a CNC Setter in an engineering/manufacturing environment.
• Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
• Good knowledge of CNC machining principles and tooling.
• Experience with precision measuring instruments.
• Basic understanding of CNC G-code and machine programming.
• Ability to work accurately to tight tolerances.

Advantageous Experience

• Experience with CNC turning and/or milling.
• Experience with Fanuc, Siemens, Haas, Mazak, or similar controls.
• Knowledge of CAD/CAM systems.
• Experience machining steel, stainless steel, aluminium, or other engineering materials.
• Experience in a production environment working to ISO or similar quality standards.
