SUMMARY:
Back of House Manager
POSITION INFO:
BACK OF HOUSE MANAGER
Luxury Safari Lodge | Skukuza, Mpumalanga
A hands-on leadership opportunity for an experienced facilities and maintenance professional who understands the standards and operational demands of luxury hospitality.
We are seeking an experienced Back of House Manager to take ownership of maintenance, grounds, stores, procurement, technical infrastructure and back-of-house standards within a luxury safari lodge environment.
This role requires a practical leader who is equally comfortable managing preventative maintenance and technical teams as they are controlling stock, working with suppliers and ensuring health and safety compliance.
THE ROLE
Maintenance & Infrastructure
Oversee the effective maintenance of buildings, grounds and essential lodge infrastructure, including electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, generators, boreholes, water treatment, septic systems, solar installations and pool plant.
Manage planned preventative maintenance programmes, asset registers, service schedules and contractors, with a strong focus on preventing problems rather than simply reacting to breakdowns.
Stores, Stock & Procurement
Oversee stores and procurement processes, maintain accurate stock controls and manage supplier relationships. Monitor expenditure, negotiate effectively and ensure lodge assets and resources are responsibly managed.
Team Leadership
Lead maintenance, grounds and stores teams through a practical, hands-on management approach. Manage performance, attendance and discipline while actively developing and mentoring team members.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Maintain high standards of workplace safety, including PPE, hazard reporting, risk assessments and safe working practices. Ensure compliance documentation, certificates and records remain accurate and current.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You’ll bring:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in facilities, maintenance or engineering management.
- Proven experience leading technical and/or maintenance teams.
- Experience with stock control, stores, procurement or warehouse management.
- Sound practical knowledge of building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Experience managing planned preventative maintenance programmes.
- Ability to manage contractors, service schedules and asset registers.
- Good financial awareness, including budgets, stock accuracy and supplier negotiations.
- Practical computer literacy, including spreadsheets, job-card systems and stock/procurement software.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities.
Experience within a lodge, hotel or luxury hospitality environment will be highly advantageous, particularly within a remote bush or game reserve setting.
A relevant trade qualification or technical training in electrical, plumbing, mechanical or building disciplines would be advantageous, as would health and safety or first-aid training.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who is hands-on, resilient and proactive. You should be willing to get involved practically, remain calm when infrastructure challenges arise and take pride in maintaining five-star standards throughout both guest-facing and back-of-house areas.
High levels of integrity are essential, particularly when dealing with procurement, suppliers, stock and lodge assets.
