Automation Technician (Irrigation)

Our client is a prominent leader in the citrus industry, is a vertically integrated producer, packer, and exporter situated in the picturesque Citrusdal valley. We are committed to excellence in every aspect of our operations and are currently seeking a skilled and experienced Irrigation Automation Technician to join our team.
This role is central to maintaining and advancing the automation infrastructure that powers our farm’s irrigation and water management systems and requires someone with a strong understanding of automated irrigation systems, specifically with the troubleshooting, testing, installation, and commissioning of automation systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in a farming environment, with expertise in working with control panels, dosing units, radio modules, protection systems, and basic knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs). The successful applicant will also possess experience in condition monitoring and maintaining automation systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
Key Responsibilities:
• System Installation, Calibration & Maintenance: Install, configure, and maintain automation hardware including control panels, dosing units, filter banks, flush controllers, and radio communication modules. Perform scheduled inspections, calibrations, and preventative maintenance. Assist in upgrades and modifications to existing irrigation control systems to improve efficiency and reliability.
• Fault Finding & Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve hardware and software faults in automation systems both remotely and on-site. Use diagnostic tools and system logs to pinpoint errors in control units, and protection systems. Maintain accurate records of service activities, issue resolutions, and equipment performance trends.
• System Integration & Support: Collaborate with farm managers and irrigation staff to ensure seamless integration of automated systems into broader irrigation operations. Respond promptly to system alerts and issues, minimizing downtime through effective resolution strategies.
• Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of work completed, including reports on installations, troubleshooting efforts, condition monitoring findings software configurations, and standard operating procedures. Prepare detailed service reports for management. Assist in the development of training materials and operating guidelines for end-users.
• Safety & Compliance: Ensure that all work is completed in compliance with electrical codes and safety standards. Adhere to all company safety policies and regulations.
• Team Collaboration & Support: Work closely with the maintenance teams to support day-today automated irrigation operations and assist in improving the overall automation systems of the site. Provide continual training for end-users to ensure optimal system use.
• Emergency Response: Provide support in case of automation emergencies, ensuring fast resolution of any critical issues to minimize operational disruption.
Requirements and Competencies:
• Minimum 3 - 5 years hands on experience
• Certificate/Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Agricultural Technology, or related field.
• Code E/EB or C driver’s license
• Strong knowledge of automation troubleshooting methods
• Experience working with SCADA systems, remote monitoring platforms, or telemetry units (radio modules).
• Ability to work outdoor and in an agricultural setting with varied weather conditions.
• Must be comfortable climbing ladders, working in confined spaces and performing manual tasks.
• Familiarity with low-voltage systems and safety protocols in agricultural settings.
