SUMMARY:
Wind the machine so it matches the approved data.
The winder records what came out, builds what must go back in, presents the job at every hold point, and does not impregnate or close a winding that is wrong.
This is a trade, used on whatever motor work is taken in — power station, mine, rail, water or industrial.
POSITION INFO:
Grades LV Winder · MV Winder · Senior / HV Winder
Reports to Production Manager
Technical hold points Quality Manager and Engineering Manager, as marked on the QCP
Scope AC and DC rotating machines across all sectors and clients.
Employment Permanent, full time.
Overtime and breakdown cover.
Minimum requirements
- Trade tested Electrician or Armature Winder, or a documented equivalent recognised in South Africa.
- Grade experience as in the table above. MV and HV grades will be tested on form-wound data and a sample winding sheet at interview.
- Able to read a connection diagram and work to a QCP without being walked through every step.
- Medically fit for workshop work, crane-supported cores and oven / VPI heat. Prepared to work overtime on breakdowns.
- Both AC form-wound and DC armature / commutator in the same person (Senior / HV).
- Utility, mining or heavy-industrial contract motors. Ability to train a junior without lowering the standard.
Grades
Grade Typical machines Bar for appointment
LV Winder Low-voltage AC and light DC; mush / random wound Trade test plus 3 years productive rewind
MV Winder Medium-voltage form-wound; industrial and utility motors 5 years including MV form-wound and VPI
Senior / HV Winder HV form-wound, large AC, complex DC armatures 7+ years; leads data, coaches others, stands as client witness.
Accountabilities — all grades
- Record winding data before strip: turns, wire, pitch, grouping, connection, insulation, leads, RTDs / thermistors / surge rings.
- Photograph failed windings. Do not destroy evidence the client still needs.
- Strip only by the approved method. No cutting torch. Heat only within the written oven limit.
- Present the core for flux / EL-CID. Do not rewind a core that has not been cleared.
- Manufacture coils to the original design unless Engineering has approved a change in writing.
- Joints brazed or welded. Insulation class and system as specified, Class H as the normal workshop minimum unless the job says otherwise.
- Present stator / rotor / armature for Quality and client witness before VPI. That hold is not optional.
- Prepare for VPI, terminate and mark leads, and support IR, PI, surge, HV and no-load tests on the winder’s work.
- DC work to grade: armature, interpoles, field coils, commutator undercut / mica / bar-to-bar. Flag a commutator that should be replaced.
- Sign the stage you did, when you did it. Expired resin or the wrong wire is not used to keep a job moving.
Authority
- Refuse to wind a core that has not passed flux / EL-CID, or a job with no approved data / QCP.
- Stop and call Production, Quality or Engineering if the material or the hold point does not match the motor.
The winder does not change design, waive a hold point, or release a motor.
