Our well-respected client in the wool / textile industry is looking for a Wool Buyer, to be based in Port Elizabeth. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Agricultural Diploma / Degree.
  • A background within the Agriculture Sector related to Natural Fibres – Mohair / Wool, etc.
  • 1 – 2 Years’ work experience in the industry (as a Wool Evaluator / Classer / Buyer), with sound knowledge of:
    • Evaluating wool to appraise it according to colour, micron and length.
    • Wool classification.
    • Sheep breeds.
    • The wool market, and up-to-date knowledge of market prices and trends.
  • Computer Literate.
  • Bilingual (English and Afrikaans).
  • Valid Driver’s License and Own Vehicle.
  • Valid Passport. 
  • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills.
  • Able to travel locally and internationally as and when required.

 

The responsibility of the Wool Buyer will be as:

  1. A Classer, being in charge of grouping fleece into categories, including length and thickness, quality, colour, strength and cleanliness.
  2. A Valuer, assessing / estimating the value of products so that they may be sold / bought.
  3. A Buyer, to collect, assess and value wool being sold by farmers.

 

Relying on their experience and sense of sight and touch, the Wool Buyer will determine wool strength, crimp and colour and the overall quality of each fleece.

 

TASKS / DUTIES:

  • Liaise with farmers / growers and international clients.
  • Advise on sheep classing and selection.
  • Evaluate wool samples by determining colour, yield (amount of actual wool in a sample without water, grease and dirt), micron (thickness) and length.
  • Grade wool according to length, colour, evenness, burr content, strength and quality.
  • Weigh samples, write dockets and put the wool in correct stacks and bins.
  • Write details on a quote sheet and determine the wool price.
  • Telephone wool growers with confirmation of prices.
  • Return to farms to collect the bales.
  • Send invoices to the wool grower and main office.
  • May go to farms to do clean ups (collect odd bits of wool at farmer''s sheds).
  • Supervise workers involved in wool handling.
  • Work with wool brokers and advisory institutions.
  • Bid at auctions.
  • Oversee the preparation of wool for sale and ensure it meets industry agreed standards.
  • Oversee the pressing, weighing and branding of wool bales by the wool pressers.
  • May prepare an audit of accounts.
  • Ensure accurate records are kept on wool qualities and advise on laboratory test results.
  • Update statistics and market reports.
