SUMMARY:
Our client in the Manufacturing Sector is looking to fill the role of a 2x Trainee Blockmakers at their offices in Gqeberha/ Port Elizabeth

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Critical Success Factors (CSF’s) for this position are therefore:
  • Know concrete and continuously monitor the batching for accuracy and consistency per product.
  • Plant and equipment availability.
  • Understand the block machine, setup, and its settings per mould.
  • Understand the concept of Throughput (TP).
  • Health and safety.
  • Record keeping and reporting.
 
Job Description
  • Know concrete and continuously monitor the batching for accuracy and consistency per product.
  • Needs to be fully aware of the various mix designs for each type of product and needs to understand the difference between these designs.
  • Consistent batching is essential for a consistent mix to the block machine. You must make this happen.
  • Be aware of the quality of aggregates being received.
  • Ensure that the correct mix design is selected on the batching computer. This can be compared to the MMM Manual in the control room.
  • Ensure that the water dosing systems remain in operation and are on auto setting. The Hydronix water control system needs to be understood and used with cleaning of the probe carried out every mix and final cleaning done by the Block Maker. Understand this water dosing system and the settings on the system.
  • Know the mixing times required for each mix as well as the effects of ‘in-flight’ material on the mix.
  • Mixtures that have been made and not used within 20 minutes must be discarded.
  • Ensure that waste taken off the wet side is blended back to the mix at a maximum of 20% per mix.
  • Check for material flow and cleanliness of aggregate handling systems. Clean if necessary.
 
Plant and equipment availability and performance
  • Ensure that you know the plant and its automated processes in detail.
  • Daily cleaning of the plants to be done to a professional standard.
  • Needs to understand the various “eyes and sensors” of the plant, their correct positions and their purpose.
  • Do a daily inspection on all equipment and report any deviation, as consistency and the alleviation of Bottlenecks starts with good housekeeping and awareness.
  • Ensure plant productivity is targeted at 100% efficiency, but allowing for daily standing time a minimum target of 85% is expected.
  • Understand the required cycle-time for each product.
 
Understand the block machine, setup, and its settings per mould.
  • Understand mix designs.
  • Understand water to cement ratios and the effects of over or under dosing.
  • Understand the complexity of the full system, balancing the complete process where both dry side and wet side do not hold the other one up and the finger car keeps both sides busy, and that the flow of raw material, cement and concrete throughout the manufacturing process is not interrupted.
  • Need to be fully aware of all the parameters of the automated systems and the effect of each parameter on the final product and the productivity of the complete system.
  • Understand the concept of Throughput (TP).
  • Understand the concept of Bottlenecks
  • Understand how to identify and quantify a Bottleneck
  • Understand that TP is the consistency of concrete mix, the correct moisture content and the correct machine settings for any specific product. (See MMM Manual in control room for all these settings)
Quality Make exceptional quality first time.
  • Be fully aware, having read, and understood the quality system currently in use.
  • Understand the various check points and what needs to be checked at these points. The daily report has these check points listed.
  • Ensure that all documentation required by the quality system is completed and done honestly, correctly and with care.
 
Choose, know and guide your team.
  • This is the company policy on staff.
  • Ensure that all production team are assessed of skills on an ongoing basis.
  • Suggest development methods to the Production Manager for each team member.
  • Guide and nurture each team member with respect to their job description and function enabling them to constantly improve at how they carry out the functions.
  • Teach all team members to care for the environment in which they work and with the equipment that they work with.
  • Make each team member more employable.
 
Health and safety
  • Ensure that you comply with all requirements of the OHS Act.
  • Do a daily safety inspection of all areas under your control.
  • Actively be aware of, and attend to, safety issues.
  • Strive to make your working area a healthy and safe environment.
 
Record keeping and reporting
  • Ensure that all records are accurately and honestly updated on a daily basis and submitted to the Production Manager.
  • Report all issues affecting consistent mix.
  • Understand plant stoppages; report the stoppages as accurately as possible.
  • Report cycle time deviations to the Production Manager and assist him to get the cycle time back to the correct level.
  • Ensure that the packaging of all products is done in accordance to the company specifications.
  • Make sure that the batch number/s is/are placed on every pack that is send to the yard as 1st grade.
  • Makes sure that kerbing packs are also labelled correctly according to the batch.
  • Report any staff shortages, disciplinary issues, skill deficiencies, and so on.

Skills
  • Technical or Trade (Fitter)
  • At least N3 (Matric) plus trade.
  • Microsoft Office Competent (Word; Excel; Outlook). Fingers fluent on keyboard.
  • Read and write with ease.
Character
  • Able to stick to CSF’s while storms rage.
  • Factual and accurate.
  • Empathetic 
  • Communicator of relevant issues to the organization.
  • Sees organisational needs as personal goal.
  • Have values the consequence of which is that he sets boundaries.
Past Experience
  • Worked in fully automated plants as an operator.
  • Solid record of being accurate, up to date, applies mind.
  • Have numerical literacy.
  • Has lead a small team in a similar environment.
  • Solid technical experience.
  • Shown progression and influence. 
Must have
  • Experience in an automated production process where output depended on the equipment that he controlled and the staff that he lead.
  • Operated SCADA systems.
