SUMMARY:
The Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of Fort Hare has a vacancy for two Technical Assistants. They will perform routine and semiskilled work in the chemistry laboratories, maintenance of laboratory equipments, collection and distribution of glassware, distilled/deionised water and perform related work as required.
POSITION INFO:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES:
· Grade 12 Certificate (Physical Science and Mathematics) / National Diploma (Chemistry).
- Evidence of laboratory background or willingness to learn laboratory practices and procedures.
- Extensive, knowledge and understanding of calculations, including proportions, percentages and decimals.
- Effective communication skills and be Computer Literate.
- Possession of a valid Drivers’ License will be an added advantage.
- ·Must be willing to work after hours.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: · Ensure sanitation of washroom area and laboratory equipment’s and tools are in clean, safe and in good conditions.
· Sets up, calibrate, operate and perform minor maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments.
· Follow preventive maintenance procedures and notify maintenance personnel on any equipment repairs and malfunctions.
· Work with Laboratory Assistant to complete laboratory tasks within assigned timelines.
Follow proper waste disposal and recycling methodologies by collecting chemical waste, disposal methods, reagents, experiments solutions and dispose outdated components appropriately.
· Coordinate placing orders for inventory supplies needed in the laboratory.
Lead and direct general housekeeping of laboratories.
