Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC“) is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.
Main purpose of the job
- Provide psycho-social support to palliative care patients and their families
- Provide ongoing supervision and mentoring to social auxiliary workers

Key performance areas
- Assess social needs for palliative care patients and families
- Conduct individual counselling sessions for patients and families scheduled in line with Standard Operating Procedures
- Provide emotional support/counselling for patients and families exhibiting psycho-social problems
- Supervise social auxiliary workers and spiritual counsellors ensuring that they can execute the duties as per job profile
- Monitor records obtained by social auxiliary workers and spiritual counsellors and check for accuracy and SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) compliance
- Monitor social auxiliary workers and spiritual counsellors with regards to counselling ethics by observing them on an Adhoc basis
- Identify skills deficiency amongst counsellors and auxiliary social workers and address by means of rehabilitation and performance management
- Collect relevant counselling statistics from social auxiliary workers and spiritual counsellors daily
- Consolidate counselling statistics received and report to the project manager on a weekly basis
- Attend meetings as required and provide feedback to the relevant parties
- Compile reports as needed by the project
- Update participant records after each visit once they have been consulted
- Perform Adhoc duties as requested by line managers
- Orientate all new social auxiliary workers and spiritual counsellors and auxiliary social workers
- Induct visitors upon arrival with regards to the project service being offered
- Work as part of the multidisciplinary team in the hospital
Required minimum education and training
Required minimum work experience
- At least 2 years experience in Social Work
