An opportunity for two experienced SHIFT ELECTRICIANS (x2) are required for permanent employment based in Cape Town.
- These roles are ideally suited for candidates with strong steel-industry electrical backgrounds, particularly those with exposure to high-load, high-temperature continuous production environments such as ArcelorMittal, Scaw Metals, Cape Gate, Highveld Steel, and similar facilities.
- The Shift Electricians will be responsible for ensuring continuous plant electrical reliability by performing breakdown response, planned maintenance, safety inspections, fault finding, and equipment optimisation on all major electrical systems across the operation.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Electrical Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance on all electrical plant equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair breakdowns efficiently to minimise production downtime.
- Maintain electric motors, VSDs, soft starters, isolators, contactors, relays, and MCC panels.
- Inspect, service and repair crane electrical systems, including pendant and cabin controls, limit switches, drives and safety circuits.
2. Automation & Control Systems
- Assist with routine diagnostics and fault finding on:
• PLC systems (Allen Bradley / Siemens / similar)
• Control panels
• Instrumentation where applicable
- Support the engineering team with control logic troubleshooting when required.
- Ensure proper functionality of automation systems related to furnaces, overhead cranes, conveyors and material handling systems.
3. Shift-Based Electrical Support
- Provide electrical coverage across the plant during shift operations.
- Prioritise urgent breakdowns while still maintaining planned maintenance schedules.
- Communicate equipment conditions, failures and handovers clearly to next shift and supervisors.
4. Safety & Compliance
- Ensure strict compliance with the OHS Act, Lock-Out/Tag-Out, and electrical safety standards.
- Perform risk assessments, hazard identification, and permit-to-work requirements.
- Maintain a safe working environment in high-risk areas such as:
• working at heights
• crane bays
• furnace zones
• high-voltage areas
5. Condition Monitoring & Reporting
- Maintain accurate job cards, electrical checklists, and incident reports.
- Report recurring faults or potential failures to the maintenance supervisor.
- Participate in root-cause analysis processes to prevent repeat issues.
6. Continuous Improvement
- Suggest improvements for energy efficiency, equipment reliability, and plant electrical performance.
- Assist in electrical upgrades, modifications, replacements, and new installations.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
- Min 5 years’ experience in the steel industry (furnaces, melt shop, rolling mills, cranes, heavy equipment).
- Exposure to high-voltage electrical systems, heavy automation equipment, and industrial safety protocols.
- Hands-on experience working on:
- electric motors
- soft starters
- variable speed drives (VSDs)
- PLC-controlled equipment
- overhead cranes & lifting equipment
- industrial panels and MCCs
- Red Seal Trade Test (Electrician) – essential
- N3 or higher technical qualification (advantageous)
- Working-at-Heights certification (adv)
- Crane electrical systems experience required
- Must be prepared and willing to relocate to Cape Town (relocation support provided).
- Willingness to work shifts and respond to emergency call-outs.
- Strong safety knowledge and understanding of high-risk industrial environments.
