CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

To manage the optimal utilisation, performance and availability of the Unified Communications infrastructure in accordance with the Universities strategic objectives and requirements, policies and procedures, and legislative requirements.  This includes the network hardware, cabling and associated administrative systems and infrastructure deployed across the university.

To manage the human resources in the ICT unified communications (Networks) team

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• To provide strategic and transformational input for areas of responsibility for alignment with ICT strategies
• Plan, document and manage the Unified communications infrastructures to ensure secure operation and optimal utilisation and availability
• Manage network security
• To manage and resolve problems in respect of the above infrastructures
• Network equipment and cabling installations and general tasks
• To direct and manage human resources and external resources in the section
• To direct and manage assets and budgets for the section

CORE COMPETENCIES

• Leadership and Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills
• Possess an in-depth knowledge of networks infrastructure and operations
• Possess an in-depth knowledge of network cabling principles, practices and trends and their application
• Possess an in-depth knowledge of Cisco routing, switching and wireless principles, practices and trends and their application
• Have a good understanding of policies and procedures in respect of contracts and procurement processes
• Be experienced in process and project management which included the designing of new networks
• Conceptualising and Analytical skills
• Problem solving skills
• Strong written and verbal communications skills

REQUIREMENTS

• M + 3 Degree or Diploma in the relevant ICT field
• 3-5 years’ experience where relevant competency has been gained in the field of IT networking
• A Cisco CCNA and CCNP would be advantageous

SCREENING QUESTIONS

• Do you have any experience working on Cisco network hardware?
• Do you know how to troubleshoot network connectivity issues on the LAN and WAN?
• Do you have hands on experience troubleshooting network cabling issues?
• Do you have hands on experience in setting up and configuring Cisco core, distribution and access switches?
• Do you have any experience working with Cisco Wireless Controllers and Access Points?
• Do you have any experience in Network Management Software to monitor network resources and utilization?
