POSITION INFO:

Senior Software Engineer - Healthcare Technology Start-Up

Cathcart Associates are delighted to be working in close partnership with Xploro, a tech for good start-up in Manchester who are helping young people with serious illnesses with their platform.

What started as a passion project for Dom (CEO) when his daughter was diagnosed with cancer, to now being a fledgling business with the potential to help millions of people.

Your new company …

So, what do Xploro actually do? Good question!

Dom realised when his daughter was ill that as a young patient, you aren''t given much in the way of information on what to expect as a young person with cancer. This caused his daughter to be scared, anxious and feel very alone.

Realising this can''t be a unique problem for his family, he got to work on a product that is now called Xploro.

Essentially, it''s an information resource, however, as it''s aimed at children, the platform uses Augmented Reality (AR), Gameplay and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deliver the information in a way that makes the patients feel empowered, engaged and most importantly informed. Oh and they have some fun with it as well - which is obviously a huge bonus given what they are going through.

The product can help reduce the fear, anxiety and stress that''s involved in an already scary time and also aims to educate, which is vital.

Pretty amazing huh?

Where do you come in …

So up until this point Xploro has been developed by Dom''s brilliant team at his digital agency, Corporation Pop, but with equity funding now secured Dom has spun-out Xploro as a company in its own right and has stepped down from his MD role at the agency to focus on making Xploro a success.

Essentially, you''ll be the go to person for all things product related from a technology perspective.

As it stands, the stack is:

A patient app primarily built using C# within the Unity Game Development engine but also including a unique (and patent-pending) AI conversational agent coded in Python and C++. AR elements are handled using Vuforia within the Unity engine.

A web based React parent app.

A web-based management portal built using Angular but requiring an update and overhaul using React.

An API that pulls everything together using Node.js

We don''t expect you to be au fait with every part of the stack, but you''ll be comfortable using different tools and happy to explore new things all the time. This isn''t the role for you if you love one particular language and way of doing things.

The product faces off to healthcare organisations, which as I am sure you can imagine comes with some red tape and data security issues - so any experience in this realm would be super helpful. You''ll be speaking to internal IT departments, so understanding their challenges or having previous experience of this, would be very much a nice to have. If you have any experience working with FHIR standards that would be the icing on the cake!

Lastly, as an early stage employee, you can essentially write your own career roadmap. Coming in as a Senior Software Engineer, you can go down the hands-on route of Principal Engineer or maybe you want to be the Head of Development, leading a team, Dom is happy to support you and has a track record of rapidly elevating people''s careers.

Your background …

Most likely you will be working as a Senior Software Engineer for a fast-paced tech company or perhaps in a healthcare organisation already.

You''ll be comfortable working alongside an Agency (Corporation Pop) in the early stages as they slowly handover their work to the Xploro team.

As the person running the development from a hands-on perspective, your opinion will be important and if you want to try something or implement a new way of working, you''ll be encouraged to do so.

Above all else, you''ll be a techie at heart who loves problem solving; using modern software development practice and wants to make everything work as well as it can.

The process & package …

This bit is straight forward, you''ll speak to Dom, find out more about the product, the plans and where he sees this person fitting in to the team.

You get a chance to ask him questions and sound out the role.

After that, there will be a more detailed call, but nothing aimed at tripping you up, just giving both parties a chance to digest and follow up.

The salary on offer is pretty flexible for the right person with potential stock options on the table as an added bonus.

However, this isn''t the role for you if you''re chasing a pay cheque, other people will pay you more. But how often do you get a chance to lead the charge of a product making the lives of children with serious illnesses easier?

You will also be trusted to work from anywhere and manage your day like a grown up, so no strict 9-5 clock watching here. However, you will need to make it to Manchester for meetings with the team and ideation sessions from time to time. This may be once a week, a few times a month - it''s not been finalised yet. As long as you are comfortable getting into Manchester when required, we can make this one work.
