CORE PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The core purpose of this position is to lead and facilitate effective learning, teaching, and research in isiXhosa literary studies and / or Sociolinguistics studies for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the isiXhosa section of the Language and Literature Department, aligned with the vision and mission of the faculty. 

 

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Develop and lead isiXhosa Literary Studies and /or and African Sociolinguistics studies as niche areas in the faculty.
  • Contribute to the recirculation of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the isiXhosa section
  • Conduct, publish and promote research in the field of isiXhosa
  • Contribute to capacity enhancement of early career scholars in the Department
  • Participate in academic and community engagement
  • Contribute to departmental and Faculty administration

 

CORE COMPETENCIES

 

  • In-depth knowledge of African Sociolinguistics and/or Literary Studies with the focus on isiXhosa .
  • Sound knowledge and experience in teaching isiXhosa Literary Studies and/or African Sociolinguistics .
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of postgraduate theses and dissertations to completion .
  • âCapacity in developing new modules and the ability to revise and improve existing modules in response to shifts in program requirements and predicted expansion.
  • Deep knowledge in recirculation of the discipline to accommodate a diversity of experiences and contexts .
  • Experience in assessment and evaluation .
  • Proficiency in isiXhosa as a primary language
  • Familiarity with the African languages literary archive will be an added advantage .
  • Ability to link all the above with the scholarship of teaching and learning.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Proven research record specializing in the field of African Sociolinguistics and/or isiXhosa Literary Studies
  • At least 5 years' experience in teaching isiXhosa at a university level
  • Sound disciplinary and content knowledge in isiXhosa related modules
  • PhD/DLitt degree in isiXhosa with a focus on African Sociolinguistics and/or isiXhosa literary studies .
  • Senior Lecturer -A minimum of 6 research output units, including articles, Masters and Doctoral outputs. A minimum of 3 refereed publications in accredited journals (published or formally accepted for publication)
  • Associate Professor -A minimum of 10 research output units, including articles, Ms and Ds. A minimum of 5 refereed publications in accredited journals (published).
  • Ability to mentor early career scholars in the discipline .
