JOB DESCRIPTION:

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The purpose of this academic post is to develop and facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skills for learners within the Electrical Engineering profession at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to conduct and lead research, to develop research capacity in the department, to contribute to community engagement and to be involved in the core functions of the Nelson Mandela University.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Develop the research capacity and output of the department;
  • Develop the high level publication output of the department;
  • Develop the academic and practical capacity of the students;
  • Mentor students intensively;
  • Practical and technical ability in electrical and electronic fields;
  • Highly motivated and diligent working style;
  • Perform administration.

CORE COMPETENCIES

â–            In-depth knowledge of the theory and application in at least two of the fields of: Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Renewable Energy, Electronics, Simulation/Software Programming

â–            Experience in teaching and facilitating learning at final year undergraduate levels over various modes and to contribute at postgraduate levels.

â–            If applying for senior lecturer and above, candidates must have published academically in the field of at least two of the above-mentioned fields and have supervised postgraduate candidates.

REQUIREMENTS

In order to be considered for appointment to the post of Senior Lecturer, candidates must have:

  1. research doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering;
  2. with high level teaching experience in the field of any two of the fields of: Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Renewable Energy, Electronics, Simulation/Software Programming;
  3. significant research having been conducted in these fields;
  4. must have supervised postgraduate students;
  5. be eligible and willing to be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineering Technologist or Professional Engineer;
  6. significant hands-on experience in the relevant fields.

In order to be considered for appointment to the post of Associate Professor, candidates must have:

  1. a research Doctorate in Electrical Engineering
  2. at least 5 years of extensive high level research (must have published in DHET-approved, peer- reviewed journals and conferences) in the field of any two of the fields of: Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Renewable Energy, Electronics, Simulation/Software Programming;
  3. undergraduate level teaching experience;
  4. must have supervised postgraduate students;
  5. be eligible to be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineering Technologist or Professional Engineer;
  6. significant hands-on experience in the relevant fields.

Shortlisted candidates will need to give a 15 minute presentation in the form of a lecture in the fields mentioned above, demonstrating their capacity, experience, successes, and what they have learnt in the process.

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience.

The grade at which successful candidates are appointed will depend on their qualification and professional experience and status.
