CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Physics at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is renowned for its excellent academic programs and its outstanding research contributions in the field of condensed matter physics.  The department is strategically positioning itself to strengthen its teaching, research and community engagement responsibility.   The department specialises in the field of condensed matter physics (with a focus on semiconductor material and device characterization in the areas of crystal growth and photovoltaics).  The candidate should therefore have a well-established teaching and research record related to semiconductor physics.

The successful candidate will

• teach courses in both undergraduate and post-graduate programmes
• do research, manage international research collaborations and supervise MSc and PhD students
• take leadership in engagement programmes 

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by the Nelson Mandela University  at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
• Review and design academic curricula.
• Do advanced research in the field of condensed matter physics, focusing on  semiconductor physics and/or photovoltaics.

• Contribute to community engagement and be involved in the core administrative functions of the University.

CORE COMPETENCIES

• Effective lecturing of undergraduate and post-graduate physics theory courses at university level.
• Strong skills in the interfacing of equipment and related programming will be an advantage.
• Evidence of successfully securing external research funding.
• Ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines.
• Good interpersonal skills.

REQUIREMENTS

• Candidates must possess a PhD degree in Physics with 3 to 5 years relevant (post PhD) teaching and research experience.
• A track record of publications in internationally recognized journals and participation in local and international conferences.
• Successful supervision of post-graduate candidates.
• Evidence of national and international collaboration will be an advantage.
• An NRF and/or registration with a relevant professional body will be an advantage.

Note:  It will be required of the candidate to present a 10-15 minute lecture on a topic relevant to this post to an appropriate panel.
