Senior Lecturer/ Lecturer - Sociology

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The core purpose of this post is to teach, supervise and conduct research in Sociology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in Nelson Mandela University.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate level
• Facilitate transformation of curriculum content at undergraduate and postgraduate level
• Conduct research, attend academic conferences and publish to improve the research profile of the faculty
• Supervise postgraduate research
• Collaborative team member towards Sociology curriculum revitalization

CORE COMPETENCIES

• In-depth knowledge of foundational areas of Sociological Theoretical Approaches 
• Knowledge of major approaches in Social Science/Humanities research methods  
• Ability to incorporate Interdisciplinary approaches into Sociology teaching and research 
• Ability to teach, manage and conduct assessments for large undergraduate classes 
• Ability to facilitate teaching and learning via different online platforms   
• Teaching and research capability towards a transformed Sociology and Humanities curriculum
• Demonstrable familiarity and investment in contributing to rethinking conceptual sociological knowledge in South Africa
• Ability to work under pressure and cope with the complex demands of the dynamic higher education landscape
• Ability to work independently as well as co-operatively within an academic team setting with members that have diverse perspectives and differing academic approaches 
• At Senior Lecturer –Advanced experience in teaching at undergraduate and supervising postgraduate studies

REQUIREMENTS

• Demonstrable track record in using both quantitative and qualitative methods will be an advantage
• Lecturer -A Masters qualification in Sociology with proof of active registration for a PhD in Sociology (or cognate Social Sciences discipline) at the advanced writing up stage, with clear evidence provided of probable submission and graduation within the 1^st year of appointment
• Lecturer – Undergraduate teaching and learning experience
• Lecturer – Demonstrable research potential as evident in conference attendance or academic publication
• Senior Lecturer – PhD in Sociology (or cognate Social Sciences discipline with track record in Sociology teaching and research) with specialisation in Urban/ Spatial Sociology, Economic Sociology
• Senior Lecturer- Minimum 3 years undergraduate and post graduate teaching experience
• Senior Lecturer- Proven research publication record in accredited scholarly journals
• Candidates may be requested to submit an academic writing sample and may be subject to a written assessment
• Candidates will be required to furnish three references
