CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Chemistry at the Nelson Mandela University has a long history of excellence and leadership in teaching and research in the various fields of chemistry. The person appointed to this position will be expected to (1) facilitate learning in topics related to Polymer Technology and Organic Chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and across different academic programs; (2) to contribute actively in appropriate research and supervision of postgraduate students in Polymer Science & Technology or Organic Chemistry; (3) to contribute actively in the general administration duties associated with the seniority of the position; and (4)  to create academic/industry links and partnerships in their area of research expertise.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Facilitating multimodal teaching and learning in Polymer Technology and/or Organic Chemistry.
• Supervision of postgraduate research students and publishing research.
• Development of an individual field of research in chemical sciences.
• Development of national and international research networks and partnerships.
• Manage, conduct, publish and promote research.
• Involvement in academic engagement at the institutional, regional and national levels.
• Participate in public activities of the Faculty of Science and the Department of Chemistry.
• Perform administration duties normally associated with the academic position.

          Perform any other related duties as and when required.

CORE COMPETENCIES

• A sound knowledge of the theory and applications of Polymer Technology (preferably Plastics, Paint or Rubber) and Organic Chemistry.
• Ability to lecture Polymer Technology and Organic Chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and across different academic programs.
• A strong background in research and training of post graduate students at both masters and doctoral levels.
• Ability to contribute to the creation of knowledge through research and publication of research results in accredited national and international scientific journals.
• Ability to attract external financial research support. 
• Effective management of personnel, research and Learning & Teaching activities.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

REQUIREMENTS

Senior lecturer:  

•  
• At least 3 or more years’ experience in facilitating learning in Polymer Science/Technology and Organic Chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate academic levels.
• Track record and experience of supervising Honours, Master and/or Doctoral candidates.
• A track record of independently publishing research outputs (e.g articles, patents and book chapters).
• Good administration skills relevant to academic duties.

• Related industrial partnerships will be an advantage.

Associate Professor:

• Relevant Doctorate degree in Chemistry or Polymer Science.
• 6 or more years of relevant experience in facilitating learning (university teaching) in Polymer Science/Technology and Organic Chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate academic levels.
• A successful postgraduate supervision record at Masters and Doctoral levels.
• A track record of credible research outputs (e.g. articles, patents and book chapters) in Polymer Science/Technology and/or Organic Polymer Chemistry.
• Evidence of research collaborations nationally and internationally.
• A proven record of attracting competitive research funding.
• Excellent administration skills relevant to academic duties.

• Related industrial partnerships will be an advantage.
