Senior Environmental Specialist

SUMMARY:
A safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) advisor is responsible for Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, environmental regulations, and quality control. Position is based in Germiston Hub Head Office.

POSITION INFO:

1. Summary of key responsibilities

• Drafting of Group level Environmental Policies and Procedures.
• Draft and update internal environmental audit checklists.
• Internally audit non-financial data for accuracy and completeness (obtain reasoning for spikes, dips and outliers noted in data received from sites throughout South Africa and Mozambique).
• Internally audit compliance to waste acceptance procedure Group wide.
• Conduct complex internal environmental audits (specifically for the Facilities division).
• Review internal audits produced by Environmental Officer(s).
• Review external audits produced by external consultants.
• Drafting of environmental management and monitoring plans (includes the arrangement of environmental monitoring).
• Scrutinising environmental reports of external origin.
• Manage off-taker approval audit programme and conduct off-taker approval audits of a complex nature.
• Ensure closure of non-conformances / non-compliances raised on depots and off-takers in a timeous manner.
• Provide environmental technical advisory to the Group.

• Sound working knowledge of South African Environmental Legal Requirements.
• Project management.
• Environmental Management System (EMS) design and implementation (aligned to the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 International Standard).
• Experience in the environmental management sector (5 – 10 years’ sector specific experience).
• Management of sub-ordinates (including career development programmes).
• Experience in the conducting of environmental legal compliance audits (general Environmental Legal Requirements, Waste Management Licenses, Environmental Authorisations, Permits, Water Use Licenses and Environmental Management Plans).
• Integrated / CSR / Annual Reporting experience.
• Excellent report writing skills.
  
  3.  Minimum educational requirements

• BSc (Hons) Environmental Management / Environmental Science or    similar discipline (from a reputable tertiary institution).

       4.   Beneficial requirements

• MSc Environmental Management / Environmental Science or similar    discipline.
• SACNASP Registered as a Professional Natural Scientist, or as a Candidate Natural Scientist working towards registration as a Professional Natural Scientist.
• Experience working in sub-Saharan Africa.
