SGS South Africa is seeking to fulfil a key role in the SGS Matrolab Eastern Cape Civil Engineering Laboratories. The role includes but are not limited to assisting the Supervisor/ Laboratory Manager with all materials testing tasks, whether it’s on site or in the commercial laboratory. To clean all equipment on a regular basis. To complete materials testing in all laboratory division, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, aggregate with bench calculation as and when required for testing. The Materials Tester will ensure that the laboratory is clean at all times and will carry out all work-related instructions from the technicians/supervisors or authorized personnel. 

The ideal candidate for this position will be a person with strong and assertive leadership skills to command respect from those he/she deals with, whilst possessing enough energy and passion to maintain good staff relationships. A successful career in delivering performance against agreed strategic objectives and ultimately ensuring that all quality and testing methods are observed, and any deviation is reported without delay.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager, you in the role, are expected to:

• To take responsibility and to supervise and/or carry out and take responsibility of testing for all tests that the employee is deemed competent for strictly in accordance to prescribed methods. 
• To take responsibility for cleaning up the site or workshop after task is completed or at the end of the day which every comes first, where the job was carried out and will make sure its free off all consumables used to perform the job (masking tape, tins). 
• To collect, deliver and process samples without any delay or deviation for the required procedure.
• Might be requested to assist in the laboratory on ad hoc basis.
• To take responsibility to ensure adherence to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system. 
• Ensure all testing methods and laboratory system are followed.
• To take responsibility to orally report any deviations, irregularities and non-conformances. 
• To take responsibility to perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager. 
• Ensure full compliance with the Company’s Code of Integrity & Code of Conduct.
• At all times, adopt a safe behavior by exercising due regard for the health and safety of yourself, colleagues and clients, in line with the Company’s policies and procedures.
• Any duties that might be assigned to the employee from time-to-time.

Qualification and Experience

• Grade 12 / NQF4 or an additional two years relevant experience for each year of schooling below grade 12 
• Driver’s license – advantageous
• Experience and competent to perform all assigned tasks in the relevant department (TMH 1 and SANS)
• Experience in a SANAS accredited lab – advantageious
• 3 years relevant experience in the laboratory
