A Researcher: Health Economics (Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Health Systems Enablement & Innovation (HSEI) in Centurion - Gauteng.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Health Systems Enablement & Innovation (HSEI), based at the University of the Witwatersrand, studies enablement amongst individual patients, patient populations, health services and health systems with a particular focus on underserved or vulnerable populations. The aim is to help South Africa and African underserved and vulnerable populations and their national health systems realize their true potential. HSEI supports national health systems through healthcare delivery redesign, professional advice and research guided by our motto “Dignity through healthcare.

We seek a dynamic, enthusiastic and self-motivated quantitative senior researcher to be part of our health economics research portfolio. Research in this portfolio focuses on the costing studies, cost-effectiveness and benefits of healthcare interventions, health systems and health policy particularly those related to hospital services and cancer care. Successful applicants will develop and lead studies and analyze and publish data from research projects on research questions that contribute to the evidence-based for improving access to and delivery of health services.

Main purpose of the job

  • To design and implement research projects, analyse the research data and publish research findings

  • Office of the Health Systems Enablement & Innovation Unit, Centurion

Key performance areas

1. Research design, implementation, analysis and dissemination (80%)

  • Write grant proposals and develop research protocols
  • Obtain approval from relevant ethics and other regulatory bodies
  • Develop research tools
  • Supervise fieldwork (data collection, interviews, etc.)
  • Ensure quality data management
  • Monitor progress of research projects
  • Write ongoing progress reports as per project reporting requirements
  • Conduct data analysis according to the agreed data analysis plan
  • Write or contribute to peer-reviewed publications
  • Collaborate with other investigators on related studies
  • Write or contribute to conference presentations
  • Disseminate research findings internally including presentations at research days
  • Write up results report
  • Stay abreast with relevant research findings

2. Research Partnerships (10%)

  • Identify areas of collaboration for Research activities for the unit
  • Manage actors involved in the research collaborations of the unit
  • Follow-up on progress and the development of research activities emanating from partnerships
  • Create a database of research partnerships for the unit, with an indication of partner roles and responsibilities and envisioned outcomes for the partnerships

3. Effective self-management and performance ownership (10%)

Required minimum education and training

  • Master’s degree in Public Health specializing in Health Economics
  • Registration with relevant Professional Body

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Proven technical expertise in economic evaluation
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis software
  • Ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Assertive, confident and adaptable
  • Expertise with data analysis software
  • Demonstrated writing and communication skills
  • National and international travel and overtime/weekends may be required from time to time
  • Able to work in a challenging and highly pressurized environment
  • Liaise effectively with the Senior management team, research team members and support staff as well as with collaborators

Required minimum work experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience working in the health sector
  • Relevant research experience in Health Economics in particular conducting costing studies
  • Good knowledge and understanding of health systems, public health, and health policy
