CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

SAIMI seeks to appoint a Research Associate, covering the various fields of the maritime economy (for example, but not limited to, maritime transport, maritime manufacturing, aquaculture, fisheries, oil & gas exploration, marine protection & ocean governance, coastal tourism, small harbour development), with an emphasis on the socio-economic and skills development aspects of the particular research area. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate working towards a PhD to complete their research while gaining experience in a national institute and a multi-disciplinary environment geared to the application of research. The position reports to the Research Director.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

1. Research Development and Innovation 1.1 Develop research proposals and conduct research in the associate's field of expertise, under the direction of the Research Director.

1.2 Contribute to the implementation of research findings and recommendations towards innovative development of the maritime sector.

1.3 Develop research proposals, plans, and conduct research.

1.4 Ensure research projects adhere to frameworks and all documentation is maintained appropriately for each project.

2. Knowledge Management

2.1 Assist in establishing SAIMI as a centre of knowledge and information sharing to service the maritime sector. 2.2 Manage a knowledge management hub strategy and system.

2.3 Updated SAIMI research repository with relevant research outputs and artifacts.

2.4 Identify content partners (local and international) for SAIMI knowledge system.

3. SAIMI Think Tank

3.1 Support in developing and managing the stakeholder engagement plan. 3.2 Manage partnerships, and network with key stakeholders.

3.3 Assist in facilitating stakeholder engagements through joint projects, partnerships, workshops, and research dissemination.

3.4 Capturing and maintenance of a stakeholder group database.

3.5 To implement strategic communication and engagement plans around identified areas.

3.6 To actively drive plans using a project management co-creation approach towards beneficial relationship growth both internally and externally.

4. Maritime Policy and Advocacy

4.1 Support the Research Director in developing and implementing a strategic advocacy plan that will position SAIMI and its impact in society favorably among key stakeholders and the general public 4.2 Provide research on policy, data, insights, and trends that help make case for the value and impact at local, region, and collectively on a national scale;

4.3 Share policy insights and foresights that enable policy makers to make decisions which maximize the accrual of sustainable benefits for the country and its citizens.

4.4 Share SAIMI research output and capabilities with partners and stakeholders - build relationships with similar institutes in maritime research, universities, and research organisations.

4.5 Contribute to advancing the vision and mission of SAIMI by providing data, information and education on various policy and strategic trends that may impact the achievement of sustainable outcomes within the oceans and maritime sector.

5. Monitoring and Evaluation

5.1 Establish and maintain a research documentation system such as research plans and schedules. 5.2 Monitor project expenditure and progress to ensure that targets are met, and expenditure is within budget (and is project related costs).

5.3 Ensuring research project deadlines are met.

5.4 Determining project changes.

5.5 Assess project risks and issues and provide solutions where applicable.

5.6 Preparing reports / presentation materials / documents.

5.7 Monitoring and evaluation of projects in as far as stakeholders are involved and impact.

5.8 Providing input for budget for stakeholder management activities.

5.9 Undertaking project tasks and administration as required.
