Research & Design Engineer (new products)

SUMMARY:

POSITION INFO:

Our client, a manufacturing company, is seeking to appoint a Research & Design / Product Development Engineer (new products) to be based in the Northern suburbs.

It is important in this position that the person must be able to identify new products and do research on them – this includes feasibility studies.

Requirements and Experience:

• Mechanical Engineering Degree or a BTech Degree.
• Research and Design experience is a must.
• Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer.
• At least 2 years’ experience as a Research and Development Engineer.
• Good business background and / or exposure to market research on the product being planned.
• Proactive and methodical with a hands-on and technical approach.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to perform under pressure.

Key areas of performance:

1. Assist with Market Research:

• Assist with market intelligence (who, where, what, when and how).
• Obtain and confirm product specs, price, volumes, barriers to entry.
• Market feasibility.
• Connect with industry.
• Opportunity identification.

2. Product Development:

Development and Testing:

• Technical analysis, specification, testing and modeling of the product and / or machine recommendations.
• Compile test specifications, reports, and recommendations.

Product Design:

• Responsible for conceptual product design and detail part specification.
• Responsible for innovative technology manufacturing process design.
• Coordinating specific design and development of new products with the design team as a supporting role.

3. Project Management:

Project Planning:

• Responsible for setting up project feasibility and scope.
• Responsible for setting up project plan with Gannt chart and expected deliverables.

Implementation, commissioning, and launch of project:

• Drive product development throughout the project life cycle.
• Monitor and control all aspects of project, including planning and financial.
• Ensure quality project implementation, within time frame, including project handover documentation and training.

4. Research and Development:

Research and Reporting:

• Responsible for the research and identification of all new / existing products, processes, opportunities, and machinery.
• Conduct technical research into new / existing products, processes, and machinery within the plant.
• Compile technical data, technical analysis, interpretations, and recommendations of engineering practices with relation to the above.
• Research potential limitations / restrictions within the plant.
• Responsible to keep in touch with the latest technology by using correct methodology.
• Responsible for feasibility studies.
• Report all findings to Projects Engineer / CEO.

Development:

• Responsible for the improvement of new product or machinery on a technical level and perform test thereof.
• Responsible to improve and / or develop existing / new products, processes, and machinery on a technical level, within the plant.
• Responsible to motivate, illustrate and present technical findings to the rest of the team.
• Responsible to ensure the correct application and commissioning at the time of completing the project.

5. Research and Design Administration:

General Administration:

• Responsible for the control and safe record keeping of all research details per project.
• Responsible to interpret and investigate technical facts and findings.
• Responsible to for all product documentation, and records on file.
• Delegate and assist with basic drawing and design of relevant product designs where applicable.

Procurement:

• Responsible to service all procurement needs which fall within the scope of the Engineering team.
• Consult, liaise and interact with sub-contractors, and service providers with relation to product requirements.
• Consult, liaise and interact with clients with relation to product requirements, and / or customer needs.
• Compile and manage supplier agreements and contracts.
• Compile applicable reports, and illustrations with analytical information and other relevant documents in support of your findings.

6. Cost Control:

• Responsible to monitor and maintain project costs.
• Responsible to motivate any purchases and approval of it.
• Responsible for product and component costing.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Salary offered: Market related.
