SUMMARY:
RADIATION THERAPIST - Oncology

POSITION INFO:

To administer radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by an Oncologist according to established practices and standards. Must have a good understanding of radiotherapy techniques and planning principles.

 To practice safe procedures and adhere to radiation safety measures.

Requirements:

• Diploma or degree from tertiary institution
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar environment / practice 
• Must be registered with the HPCSA

Duties:

• Maintain a high degree of accuracy in treatment set-up and an awareness of safety issues.
• Utilize treatment accessories to accurately reproduce the radiotherapy treatment as recorded in the set-up notes.
• Maintain the quality assurance program, by taking EPIS as per protocol. Report inaccuracies to Oncologist.
• Maintain accurate and detailed treatment chart documentation.
• Complete the daily treatment schedule. 
• Maintain an accurate record of procedures, including billing information and codes.
• Serve as a liaison between the patient and other members of the oncology team (Oncologists, chemo nurses, social workers, dieticians, etc.).
• Remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient.
• Explain treatment procedures to the patient and inform the patient as to probable side effects.
• Observe the clinical progress of the patient. 
• Use clinical decision-making skills and report any signs of complications to the relevant oncologist.
• Display professional conduct essential to the wellbeing of the oncology patient.
• Adhere to radiation safety checks; know safe limits of equipment operations and report abnormalities or inconsistencies to the proper authority.
• Adhere to radiotherapy code of ethics.
• Maintain a safe, neat and orderly treatment room.
• Comply with all the practice facility’s policies, procedures and practices.
• Actively commit to working in an open, transparent and honest manner with a culture dedicated to learning and improvement.
• Admin tasks such as stats, record keeping, preparation of authorization documents
• Provide on-call coverage for treatment of emergency patients after hours.
• Pro-actively maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) in accordance with the HPCSA professional standards.
