A Qualitative Researcher (Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg - Gauteng.

Background

Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC“) is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.

The Clinical HIV Research Unit (Wits CHRU) was initiated in 1998 by Professor Ian Sanne, under the auspices of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).  Today the CHRU is an HIV/AIDS, TB, and Cervical Cancer research syndicate of the Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (WHC), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of WITS.

Main purpose of the job

  • Our fast-growing team focuses on women’s cancer prevention and health equity research within the Clinical HIV Research Unit, a division of Wits Health Consortium
  • We’re looking for an experienced Qualitative Researcher who will design, plan, and implement qualitative and mixed-methods research projects within a multidisciplinary women’s health research program

  • S/he will also conduct qualitative fieldwork, including focus groups and in-depth interviews, and supervise junior researchers, research assistants, and community-based recruiters

  • Helen Joseph Hospital, Johannesburg

Key performance areas

  • Assist investigators with the design and planning of qualitative and mixed-methods research projects
  • Assist with preparation of regulatory submissions to ethics committees and other regulatory agencies, as needed
  • Develop and refine research tools in collaborations with the investigators
  • Assist with the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Conduct qualitative fieldwork, including focus groups and in-depth interviews
  • Transcribe, translate, and contribute to team-based qualitative data analysis
  • Participate in hiring and training of research staff
  • Supervise junior researchers, research assistants, and community-based recruiters
  • Prepare research-related reports/presentations, as requested

Required minimum education and training

  • Master’s degree in a health-related field (or similar) and formal training in qualitative or mixed-methods research

Required minimum work experience

  • Three to five years of experience conducting qualitative research
  • Spoken and written fluency in English, IsiZulu, and Sesotho

  • Training in good clinical practice and protection of human subjects

  • Self-motivation, a can-do attitude, and the ability to work independently

  • Good problem-solving skills

  • Excellent organizational, management, and communications skills

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities

  • Excellent computer literacy, writing, and presentation skills

  • Experience conducting research on woman’s cancers, sexual and reproductive health, or HIV (or similar)

     

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities

  • Qualitative data analysis experience
  • Experience managing research staff
  • Familiarity with regulatory procedures for research conducted in South Africa
  • Willingness to work overtime/weekends
  • Willingness to travel internationally for at least one 7-day trip per year
