Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC“) is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.
Main purpose of the job
- Provide palliative care nursing to patients with life-threatening illnesses who require treatment and support throughout the continuum of care
Location
- Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital
Key performance areas
- Undertake a comprehensive patient assessment to include physical, psychological, social, and spiritual elements of care
- Use the outcomes of patient assessment to develop and implement plans of care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), the patient and family as appropriate
- Monitor and evaluate the patient’s response to treatment and amend the plan of care according to the prescribed protocols
- Educate cancer patients and their families about available treatment options and procedures related to the disease
Required minimum education and training
- Diploma in General Nursing
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Required minimum work experience
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in palliative care nursing
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities
- Basic knowledge and application of the palliative care principle for cancer patients would be an advantage
- Systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- The ability to work with patients that are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses
- Effective communication with parties at different levels
- Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills together Microsoft Office skills
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
