Professional Nurse – Ophthalmic Scrub & Recovery (Eye Theatre) | Kimberley, Northern Cape
POSITION INFO:
Our client, a respected healthcare provider in Kimberley, Northern Cape, is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Professional Nurse – Ophthalmic Scrub & Recovery to join their theatre team. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a dedicated nursing professional with ophthalmology theatre experience to contribute to the delivery of high-quality surgical and post-operative patient care within a specialised clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Theatre & Clinical Service Delivery
- Scrub and assist during ophthalmic surgical procedures, including cataract, retinal, glaucoma, and other eye-related surgeries.
- Prepare and maintain ophthalmic theatre instruments, consumables, and specialised equipment.
- Ensure strict adherence to aseptic techniques, infection prevention standards, and theatre protocols.
- Assist surgeons and theatre teams throughout the perioperative process.
- Monitor patient safety and maintain accurate clinical documentation.
Recovery & Post-Operative Care
- Provide comprehensive post-anaesthetic and post-operative nursing care within the recovery unit.
- Monitor patients'''' vital signs, pain levels, and recovery progress following surgical procedures.
- Identify and escalate post-operative complications promptly and appropriately.
- Ensure patients are clinically stable and prepared for discharge or transfer according to established protocols.
- Provide patient and family education regarding post-operative care and recovery expectations.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration & Clinical Governance
- Collaborate effectively with ophthalmologists, anaesthetists, nursing colleagues, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and patient safety programmes.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to a culture of excellence, patient-centred care, and continuous improvement.
Operational Support
- Ensure theatre equipment and supplies are appropriately maintained and available for scheduled procedures.
- Support efficient theatre utilisation and patient flow.
- Participate in stock management and equipment monitoring processes.
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of departmental policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- National Senior Certificate.
- Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Post-Basic Qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science will be advantageous.
- Proven experience as a Scrub Sister within an Ophthalmology / Eye Theatre environment.
- Recovery (PACU) experience is essential.
- Current BLS certification.
- ACLS certification will be advantageous.
- Eligibility to work in South Africa.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Sound knowledge of ophthalmic surgical procedures and theatre practices.
- Strong understanding of infection prevention and control principles.
- Competence in post-anaesthetic patient monitoring and recovery nursing.
- Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
