SUMMARY:
A Professional Nurse - Oncology Trained (until 31 March 2022) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Health Systems Enablement & Innovation (HSEI) in Mthatha - Eastern Cape.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Health Systems Enablement & Innovation (HSEI), based at the University of the Witwatersrand, studies enablement amongst individual patients, patient populations, health services and health systems with a particular focus on underserved or vulnerable populations. The aim is to help South Africa and African underserved and vulnerable populations and their national health systems realize their true potential. HSEI supports national health systems through healthcare delivery redesign, professional advice and research guided by our motto “Dignity through healthcare.

We seek a dynamic, enthusiastic and self-motivated quantitative senior researcher to be part of our health economics research portfolio. Research in this portfolio focuses on the costing studies, cost-effectiveness and benefits of healthcare interventions, health systems and health policy particularly those related to hospital services and cancer care. Successful applicants will develop and lead studies and analyze and publish data from research projects on research questions that contribute to the evidence-based for improving access to and delivery of health services.

Main purpose of the job

  • To provide psychological and emotional care to the patients and provide information to them and their families/significant others

Key performance areas

  • Provide support to the family and significant others, through listening, problem-solving, and education and referral to the social worker
  • Provide outreach support to outreach sites
  • Introduce and manage palliative care program within NMAH and support satellite sites
  • Collate and organize multidisciplinary meetings on a fortnightly basis or more often if required
  • Maintain accurate clinical records that comply with legislation and best practice
  • Be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure that these are observed
  • Be actively involved in the preparation and implementation of policies and nursing guidelines in relation to the management of care to cancer patients
  • Participate in team discussions regarding the treatment of oncology patients
  • Assist in the development and delivery of teaching and training programmes on palliative care and cancer care program
  • Use relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards and up to date care offered to the oncology patient
  • To incorporate health promotion principles into all aspects of nursing care
  • To ensure adequate patient education material is available and contribute to developing new educational material where required
  • To initiate and audit the effectiveness of the service provided by the Decentralised cancer care project
  • Ensure that clinical practice, procedures and standards of care are evidence-based and remain dynamic, ensuring quality service development to meet patient’s needs

Required minimum education and training

  • BCurr or Diploma in Nursing
  • Postgraduate qualification in Oncology Nursing Science
  • SANC registration

  • Ability to work alone and organize caseloads for peripheral sites

  • High level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient decentralized cancer care service
  • Provide leadership within the area of Oncology within the services that the Decentralised Mandela cancer care project provides
  • Support the aims and vision of the NMAH and that of the Decentralised cancer care program
  • Act with honesty and integrity at all times
  • Be a positive ambassador for the oncology unit and the decentralized cancer care BMSF project
  • Demonstrate high standards of personal conduct
  • Value and respect colleagues, other members of staff and patients
  • Work with others to develop and improve our services

Required minimum work experience

  • Minimum of 2 years post-registration experience in the area of medical oncology
