SUMMARY:
A manufacturing plastic injection moulding/machinery company based in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg seeks a Product Development Manager responsible for managing and coordinating product development projects by focusing on technical feasibility, design optimization and production. To manage all stages of a products life cycle.

Qualification

Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Industrial Design

Requirements

Proven working experience as a Products Developer or in related field.
Be comfortable using prototyping equipment(3D printers and CNC machines)
Be comfortable using Design software (Solidworks and Autodesk)
Must have engineering and design knowledge, solid knowledge of the prototype design process, strong written and verbal skills

Duties

Product Life Cycle
• Project manage all stages of a product''s life cycle from first sketch to final production, including:
• Assist BUM in identifying gaps in the Business Unit’s product line that can help them determine where there is
need for product development.
• Perform market research to assess the potential demand.
• Generate ideas.
• Generate product requirements, determine specifications and pricing throughout the opportunity exploration
phase.
• Prepare and initiate design brief to be given to Design Department.
• Develop design proposals in collaboration with the Design Department while ensuring products meet expectations.
• Co-ordinate efforts with BUM and Marketing Department to ensure the product will fit with existing marketing
strategies.
• Conduct research when products are in the development stage to determine if potential customers are satisfied.
• Develop and approve prototype samples for production style and functionality testing.
• Develop Tooling proposals in collaboration with the Tooling Department while ensuring products meet
expectations.
• Develop Production proposals in collaboration with the Production Department while ensuring products meet
expectations.
• Oversee Tooling and Production.

• Manage approval process of all development stages, documents, and processes.
• Implement full product testing to ensure product meets required specifications and functionality.
• Use feedback to inform decisions about product modifications before finalizing the product and making it available
for sale.
• Use development cost knowledge to assist with correct product price setting.
• Stay informed and up to date regarding all industry related regulations to ensure all relevant regulations are
considered during the development process.
• Train account reps and business development on new products to ensure adequate product knowledge for the
internal and external sales teams.

Actively Monitor Project Goals
• Implement the annual product development plan in line with allocated development budget.
• Create and maintain an approved development costing per project while ensuring that the project does not
exceed approved expenses.
• Establish various project goals in collaboration with all internal and external stakeholders.
• Actively set and achieve goals and milestones per project to ensure that progress is made, and the goals are
on track to reach the desired outcome by the set deadline.
• Approve prototype samples during the development process.
• Along with the BUM, approve all new products before they are launched with specific focus on quality, design,
appearance, and price, by using technical knowledge and formal guidelines.
• Manage day-to-day project coordination with outside labs and vendors.
• Work with suppliers and end customers to make sure that target costs are met.
• Work effectively with other departments like marketing, design, tooling, and manufacturing throughout the product
development process to develop a new product’s design and vendor strategy.

Incorporate Policies and Procedures
• Follow policies and procedures, model them and hold others accountable for following them consistently .

Manage, Train and Mentor Staff
• Hire, train, develop, and manage Assistant Product Development Managers.
• Manage Product Development team members.
• Effectively communicate the expectation levels and vision of the company to staff members.
• Motivate, encourage, and train staff in a manner that results in high performance and general growth of the
Business Unit.
• Effectively mentor staff members to help them achieve set outcomes.

Strategic Management
• Manage allocated Development budget and spend per project ensuring all required approvals, checks and
balance are applied.
• Understand costs per product in order to assist the BUM in setting and maintaining product GPs provided
by EXCO.
• Assist the BUM in determining how the Business Unit can meet business targets while providing new products
that will serve the needs of their clients.
• In collaboration with the Business Unit Manager, help determine what products are created and produced.

Sales & Marketing
• Build and maintain strong relationship with the customers to maintain good revenue growth.

General
• Create and develop new products and improve existing products.
• Work on requirements provided by BUM or EXCO whenever required.
• Monitor development QA and QC measures.
• Perform review and validation of Business Unit development processes and equipment.
• Provide written reports to BUM on development projects progress as required.
