A Pharmacy Supervisor vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) in Soweto, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.

In recent years the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, to include treatment trials in adults and children, prevention research, psychosocial research and policy development. In addition, the Unit has developed an HIV vaccine clinical trials unit (HVCTU) and started with HIV Vaccine Trials back in 2001.

The unit is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of research and policy in the area of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It has also developed a reputation as a leading African research unit for clinical trials in adults and children with HIV, with one of the largest cohorts.

Main purpose of the job

  • To strategically and effectively manage pharmacy operations and pharmacy staff in accordance with good pharmacy practice (GPP) and South African Pharmacy Council Legislation

Location

  • PHRU – Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto 

Key performance areas

  • Responsible for leading and supervising a team of pharmacists
  • Implement, evaluate and supervise strategies, which ensure a high standard of quality control and assurance
  • Execute all duties, functions and responsibilities in accordance to PHRU SOP’s, legislation and sponsor requirements
  • Ensure studies are conducted in accordance with GCP, sponsor and regulatory requirements
  • To perform general pharmacy duties
  • Assist with daily management to achieve pharmacy goals
  • Ensure safe storage of study products including knowledge, monitoring, and oversight and reporting of irregularities
  • Participate in Project Management
  • Review the captured daily participant visit statistics to monitor and evaluate staff dispensing outputs
  • Identify staff training needs and provide in-house training where needed
  • Perform all management duties in absence of the Pharmacy Manager
  • Assist with drawing up and review of SOP’s and work practices of pharmacy
  • Assist with formulating an agenda for scheduled pharmacy meetings and record minutes of meetings held
  • Assist with scheduling of routine equipment maintenance (in conjunction with the Technical Supervisor)
  • Provide professional, pharmaceutical and pharmacological knowledge to all study teams when required
  • Compile reports as requested by projects from time to time
  • Ensure a high level of customer-centricity in all dealings with both internal and external customers
  • Assist in hiring of new employees and professional development of employees                                                                             
  • Self-management and performance ownership
  • Temperature monitoring and safe storage of medication

Required minimum education and training

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy
  • At least 3 years’ experience in clinical trails
  • Registered with SA Pharmacy Council

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Able to work under pressure
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead and manage a team
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy Legislation and Good Pharmacy Practice
  • Good organizational skills and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Managerial experience will be advantageous
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Able to exercise discretion and independent decision-making
  • A high level of attention to detail and accuracy is required
  • Computer literacy is essential
