SUMMARY:
Paarl Area - WC: The successful candidate will manage the olive farm in all aspects

POSITION INFO:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Agricultural Qualification (preferably)

Min of 4 years previous experience in similar role

Olive oil processing – food technology education and experience (an advantage).

Communication skills – English (read, speak, write), Afrikaans (read, speak, write).

Computer Literacy.

Knowledge in Global GAP HACCP ISO

MS Office – Word & Excel.

Internet and Outlook.

Job Functions:

1. Regular communications with owner

2. Manage human resources – farm workers, bottling staff and casuals.

3. Manage all operations on farm.

4. Manage all operations in bottling plant.

5. Close co-operation and co-ordination with Financial Manager.

6. Public Relations (to a lesser degree).

Duties:

1. Grove Management

a) Cultivation

b) Chemical Pest Control

c) Fertilizer programme

d) Pruning

e) Irrigation

f) Development of new groves

2. Maintenance of farm vehicles, tractors and equipment.

a) Keeping all vehicles, tractors and equipment in working condition at all times.

b) Oversee repair and maintenance.

c) Be able to perform general repairs.

3. General farm maintenance and development

a) Buildings – maintenance and up-keep.

b) Fencing

c) General Hygiene

d) Pest control

4. Management of staff

a) Time schedules.

b) Drivers traveling records.

c) Staff attendance, leave, warnings and disciplinary hearings.

5. Proper record keeping

a) Pest control - e.g. Spray dates, chemicals used, calibration etc.

b) Orchard maintenance – cultivation details, irrigation schedules etc.

c) Packaging material.

d) Oil stock.

e) Bottling runs.

f) Diesel levels and usage.

g) Harvesting statistics.

h) Intake and weighing of olives during harvesting.

6. Harvesting

a) On-time delivering of olives at the factory.

b) Quantity and quality control of olives delivered to the factory.

c) Management of picking procedures and equipment.

d) Facilitate harvesting contractors.

e) Co-ordinate and select seasonal harvesting contractors and casuals.

f) Assist the oil maker in all his duties as required.

g) Supervising bottling staff in factory.

h) Co-ordinate oil storage.

7. Communications

a) Work in close relationship with the Financial Manager to co-ordinate orders received from distributors with the bottling and packing process.

b) Daily and weekly written status reports regarding all operational activities.

c) Provide strategic perspective and operational activities.

d) Keeping the owner of the farm informed about the progress of the trees.

Requirements and skills:

1. Knowledge of the following will be an advantage:

a) Crops – growth and deceases.

b) Planting of olive trees.

c) Harvesting of fruit by hand and machine.

d) Identifying plants, pests and weeds.

e) Applying pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers to crops.

f) Irrigation.

2. Business Management knowledge and experience – Mathematical and strategic planning skills essential.

a) Managerial Skills – Human resources

b) Good leadership.

c) Must be able to manage and motivate teams.

d) Must have the ability to motivate increased production and growth within the individual positions.

e) Motivate and promote general well-being amongst the work force.

f) Problem solving.

g) Conflict resolution.

h) Facilitate disciplinary hearings with staff, divisional managers and lawyers.
